Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Sep 24, 2009 3:57 pm I'm looking at finalising my in-wall/ceiling speaker purchase. I have an option to buy a 10" in-wall passive sub (Frequency Range (Hz) 30-150). The fronts that I am getting have a Frequency Range (Hz) 65-22k. So, should I really bother with the passive sub OR just put the $300-$400 towards getting a decent active sub ? The space that an active sub takes up will not be an issue. However, I need to make a decision now as it will affect the speaker cable runs. Thanks for your thoughts. Re: Should I bother with a passive sub ? 2Sep 25, 2009 9:43 am As long as it can handle a lot of power and you get a decent amp to drive it (I'm tipping unless you have some special AV Recceiver I don't know about it won't be good enough, or perhaps even capable to drive the sub) it should be OK. I'm serious about the power though - even 100WRMS dedicated to that sub probably won't be enough (as it will not have it's own specifically designed cabinet to get the best out of it it won't perform quite as well as an equally spec'd stand-alone...). P.S. I have an AMC (quality Hi-Fi stuff...) power amp - 2 x 100WRMS or 1 x 250WRMS - that I've really only discovered this week (having just moved house last week) I simply can't incorporate into any of my audio setups (I have 4 ). Just in case you didn't know what you could use to drive the sub... I actually used to use it to drive 2 x 8" In-wall subs that I also still have but no longer use... Re: Should I bother with a passive sub ? 3Sep 25, 2009 11:08 am hmmmm I don't like the prospect of yet another box just to drive that passive sub. I think you've swayed me to go for an active sub - then I can just use the dedicated LFE AV Receiver output and let it handle the crossover.
