Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Aug 31, 2009 12:53 pm Hello All, The time has arrived, the hubby and I are building a new house in Lara and we (mainly him) are having trouble deciding which was its the best to go in regards to a HT system. I have spent hours (no word of a lie) reading through the forum about set ups and really enjoying the whole suspense of the house build and more importantly my HT room. Our HT room measures 3600 by 5400. One small window which will be covered by a heavy draped curtain, carpet floor and a solid door. My budget for this room will be at $10k all up including recliners. My dilemma arises with value for money, do we go to the “Big Picture People” and get a deal for around $8k or get everything individually? The main pro with BPP is that they will come in and do the lot, place everything etc. However, our best mates a sparky and other mate runs cabling so it’s a matter of slabs of beer not large coin. Would it be in our best interests to get the boys in during lock up and rough in all my speaker cables and HDMIs and then get everything separate or just get a package from one of these specialists? We want a projector with a 105-110inch fixed screen, a 7.1 system if possible in my sized room. We will mainly watch movies in here and the footy when its on. We also want to know how to run IQ2 from our lounge where the box will be to my HT room? Is it simply using HDMI cable? What would you do and what would you get. Building commences in 30 days…. Re: Building a new house - what to do about the HT room 2Aug 31, 2009 5:14 pm If you've got a sparky mate who is reliable and works for beer rates then I'd absolutely be getting him in to prewire everything! I don't believe the BPP would be so precious that they'd refuse to do a package for you if they weren't allowed to do the wiring. If I was them I'd do the whole wiring plan for you anyway if it meant landing the deal on the rest of the package (screen, PJ, install, config, etc.) Re: Building a new house - what to do about the HT room 3Sep 01, 2009 10:08 am For long HDMI cable runs, consider using HDMI over CAT5/6 ethernet. What this means is that the digital signal is transmitted over a relatively cheap CAT5 or 6 ethernet cable and then it is terminated/converted into an HDMI point at each end. One example of a device that does this in an all-in-one wall plate is this :http://cgi.ebay.com.au/HDMI-Over-CAT5E-CAT6-7-Wall-plate-Extender-Krone-Combo_W0QQitemZ220471785610QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Hi_Fi_Speakers?hash=item335524788a&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14. There are also products that can act as IR extenders over ethernet - but that's another topic. Re: Building a new house - what to do about the HT room 4Sep 01, 2009 10:38 am If you can try to avoid "connectors or extenders" as much as possible as each stop / start in wire degrades the sound and video quality. It's also like this is most display homes also, If you look behind the entertainment unit you'll usually find all the cables generally come straight though a wall plate that just has a hole in it. ---------------------------------------- Building the PD Lisbon 24 http://www.porterdavis.com.au/#homeviewer/lisbon/24 Blog of our progress. http://lisbon24.blogspot.com/ Homeone build thread https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=28665 Re: Building a new house - what to do about the HT room 5Sep 01, 2009 11:43 am TimmyDunlop If you can try to avoid "connectors or extenders" as much as possible as each stop / start in wire degrades the sound and video quality. The degradation in sound and video quality as a result of any "stop/start" would be negligible compared to the degradation that can be expected in the signal over long distances. If anything, shielded CAT6 is a better medium for long distance transmission of a digital signal than a long HDMI cable would be. Yes. It definitely still occurs. Also, if you are thinking about running a long (over 20m) HDMI signal over Cat5E or even Cat6 (requires 2 parallel runs of Cat5E/6 cable) please be aware that it can be fickle - for one thing the cables need to be EXACTLY the same length so there is no lag at all between the signals arriving via each cable Hey, I am wanting to add a second toilet to my house, bit we have limited room.
