Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Aug 28, 2009 2:53 pm Hi Rod, I did a bit of a search but couldn't find any detailed info. I was hoping that you could draw on your experience and tell me a bit about in-wall (or in-ceiling) speaker mounting/installation. For a 5.1 setup... I was hoping to have the 2 rear speakers mounted in the ceiling. I imagine that whatever speakers I choose will have some brackets or clips of some sort to make the installation into the ceiling reasonably easy - I'm pretty comfortable with that and will definitely go with it. For the 2 front and the centre channel speakers, I'm leaning towards the in-wall type to be able to flush mount them also. The problem here is that this is into an internal gyprock wall - which is 90mm. Most speakers that I see have a mounting depth equal to or slightly larger than this 90mm (although I have seen some at 89mm). In general are these speakers not really designed to go on internal 90mm walls ? If I buy some that have an 89mm mounting depth (which I have seen), is that cutting it too fine ? I'd hate to buy some and find out the hard way !! Thanks very much for any advice. Re: in-wall (or in-ceiling) speaker mounting 2Aug 28, 2009 6:21 pm Hi JM. Almost all In-wall speakers sold in Australia are designed to fit into our standard 90mm stud walls (you may have been reading the overall depth figure which includes however much actually sits proud of the wall...) and have a mounting depth of less than 90mm (eg. almost all Jamo In-wall speakers are 84mm deep, give or take a mm or two...). With the few brands I've installed myself over the past 6 years or so (Jamo, Mordaunt-Short, Paradigm, Boston Acoustics, Elan, and some cheapies like Selby etc.) the only ones I came across that were too deep for our walls are the big Mordaunt-Short ones - the 2 x 6.5" AW162 (which sucks because it really is kick-arse and good value for such a high-end In-wall) - this is because they are English and in England they use 5" studs (125mm)... The In-ceilings and In-walls come with all of the mounting systems they need - all you need to do is cut the correct hole in the Gyprock and mount them in... The fronts, centre and sub are from the SPX range Re: in-wall (or in-ceiling) speaker mounting 5Aug 31, 2009 12:45 pm I purchased 4 ceiling speakers (2x2) of Yamaha brand. Paid $159 per set. These are 8 ohms speakers with crossover and rated max 100W however not magnetically shielded. Guess you don’t have to be worry about that when it’s come to in ceiling speakers. Hi RamIT, Which model did you purchase ? How do you find the Yamahas ? That seems like good value. Hi Rod, Just looking at the new range of Jamo in wall/ceiling speakers and they seem to have a mounting depth of 94mm ... should I now be concerned ? 94mm is what is stated for the "hole" depth. The overall depth is over 100mm. The new range is the IW/IC 400 and 600 series. The mounting depth appears to have increased from the previous 84mm. Have you come across this newer Jamo range yet ? Cheers. Re: in-wall (or in-ceiling) speaker mounting 9Sep 03, 2009 8:56 am Hi JM. Even at 97mm mounting depth, you will have at least 100mm to play with (90mm stud + 10mm plasterboard + <1mm glue between stud and plaster) so there will still be no issue. Those new Jamo's do look nice - I haven't used them much recently as I've mostly been using Paradigm and Elan, but it looks like they aren't much more than the models they have replaced... Thanks for the tips on my mounting depth concerns. Do you box-in your in walls (and in ceilings) with MDF or acoustic foam ? It makes far less difference than you'd think, and a lot less than making sure the room isn't acoustically all wrong (like having hardwood or tiled floors, etc...). Update from me! Couldn't find the trimmer - not sure if there isn't one simply because the eave is so narrow. Went ahead with the spring toggles and it all worked out… 7 5835 It sounds like you have a crack in your garage where the wall meets the ceiling, along the shadow line on the… 0 17191 Thank you again Simeon..
