Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Aug 06, 2009 7:29 pm I want to buy a home theatre system to run a PS3, Wii and pay TV. I found found a Yamaha system that looks fairly decent for lower level it is a YHT-392AU: http://www.yamahamusic.com.au/products/avit/htsystems/YHT-392AU.asp Just wondering if the audio and image is carried through the HDMI cables or do I need to use the HDMI cables for the image and optical cables for the sound. I take it this capability depends on the receiver. Basically i'm after a receiver that reduces the number of cables from being run up the wall to a wall mounted plasma. Does anyone have any other suggested HT systems for this type of setup? I wasn't sure as the sales person at HN told me I would still need to use optical cables unless I bought a HDMI 1.3 receiver. you need at least one optical cable from TV to amp for FTA channels sound. I wasn't sure as the sales person at HN told me I would still need to use optical cables unless I bought a HDMI 1.3 receiver. That's completely false. HDMI 1.1, 1.2, and 1.3 added DVD-Audio (1.1), SACD Audio (1.2), and expanded colour depth (1.3) capabilities to HDMI, but since inception HDMI has always carried ALL of the digital audio formats from DVD and Blu-Ray movies. I wasn't sure as the sales person at HN told me I would still need to use optical cables unless I bought a HDMI 1.3 receiver. that doesn't surprise me at the least... it wasn't a monster optical cable he was trying to sell was it? Re: Yamaha 5.1 Home Theatre YHT-392AU - HDMI connections 8Aug 15, 2009 2:26 pm Those cheaper yamaha recievers will not support audio over HDMI, only picture. Not saying that the audio is not sent through the cable, only that the reciever will not pick it up. Have seen this with a few of the lower end recievers.
