I'm currently planning out my first house. The layout has left a large dead area in the middle of the living area enough for a small room. The internal dimensions are 2.0m x 3.0m. I figured I could fit a sofa (or a lovesac!), low cabinet and a LCD in there. I'm not sure the size of small projectors, any that could fit that size?
Pros: Me and GF both love movies, but she also watches TV shows. Lounge + this room allows dual viewing
Keeps TV out of bedrooms (not sure if thats a good thing
)
Gives me (or anyone) a retreat to hide out in (especially if we have kids)
Totally enclose space means nice and dark for movies (no glare during the day)
Its a dedicated room. That means no thorough-fare
Can always be converted to a small office/study later on
Cons:Sound escape via two cavity sliders (can be negated with wireless headphones)
Heat - could get stuffy without decent venting
Limited view distance
Any opinions and ideas to make it work well?
i woulndpt bother withs sucha small space just use that entire area....
Could you show the whole plan? Is it really dead space, is there a family room elsewhere?

I would suggest building the house and then adding the room in later if you think you can make it fit. I think you will have trouble finding a 2-seater couch to fit!
As a mum cleaning up after 2 kids, I would put a full wall across in line with the end of the dining room and kitchen to use as a playroom. That way you can just shut the door on the mess if you have visitors. (Of course, they wouldn't be able to use your toilet, then.
) You could do something clever with bifolds or double cavity sliders so you can open the space up or close it off to suit. Something multi-purpose would grow with your family, although I can see your line-of-thought behind a room to escape to!
As for your toilet, why don't you move the door so you enter from the laundry? Just a thought...

I've found quite a few sofas that would fit in a 2m wide room (getting them in there would be another story!)
Rachel, I actually don't mind what you've done! The space in the master bedroom probably won't be missed too much - whereas an extra meter in the theatre room is a big gain.
I'm not sure how they would effect the flow of the house though.
Why not just build the "top half" of the room. this will give you the isolation from the toilet etc, but give you the ability to place the lounge further back in the open area. I hope this makes sense.
If you put that room on a plan, just make sure you don't call it a theatre or anything when going for your building permit. The room won't comply with light and ventilation requirements under the building code (you'll need a skylight which defeats the purpose of the room). Call it a linen or something, not a habitable room.
a 3m x 2m can certainly work.. I thought my room at 4.14m x 3m was too small and many other ppl told me the same.. but the 108" screen I have in my room doesn't even feel that big to me anymore!!
and a projector could work in that room.. the epson tw3000 can throw a 92" image from as close as 2.7m away.
If it got too hot just open one or both of the doors.. at night there wouldn't be much light to let in and in daytime it still wouldn't be that much.. even with sunlight shining into the room the epson can still throw a very bright image on dynamic setting.. Although I use theatre black 1 99% of the time.
if you check out avforums you will see lots of people with theatre rooms at the same dimensions as your suggested room..
anyway most ppl will disagree with me but I'm sure if you did that and had the above setup you wouldn't be disapointed..
