Hey Pugs, My sparky (who is one of the sparkies from my work) and i are roughing in at the moment and he has asked me how many points i want for data and TV in each room. I am providing all materials (get it cheap through work) so need to work out how many metres of cable i need once i work out how many points i have to run and how. I should have cleared things up when he was there but he wont stand still for 2 seconds so i can ask him the questions. I figured 1 data point for internet per room (cat6 looped from each room back to one central point??? or can it be looped like a power circuit?) and 1 TV point for FTA per room (RG6 looped to one central point and then connected to aerial via a splitter) . I would up this to 2 x RG6 in lounge and HT, 1 for foxtel 1 for FTA. I figure the 2nd cat6 you recommend in each room is for phone? and also why 4 x Cat6 in HT? and where are all these run to / from? My sparky is fast and cheap (free sometimes) but always wants me to tell him what i want and to be honest i dont have a clue with all this networking stuff Is cat6 and RG6 the most commonly used gear (best value for performance) right now? Would it be easier to post a floor plan so you could tell me where to run everything? Sparky has marked out what he says people 'normally' want but i dont know if his setup is just the easiest basic set up, so he can get out of there quicker. Thanks Re: Smart Wiring for Dummies – Help Needed 7Aug 18, 2009 10:20 am networking cable isn't looped or "daisy" chained it is one run out to the room and from a central location.... which has either lots ofr wall plates or a sexy little rack witha locakable door. location of the services is totally up to you... depending on your design. data points arn't jsut for the internet .. you can patch phones over them so for me minimum is two in each room hope you mate has their data ticket as then the entire installion will be classed as Illegal. despite you wanting to save money by the sounds you still need a specialist guy to design for you... A house has wiring for TV, telephone, background music speakers, security, automatic door latches, video surveillance, electric awning openers, touch screens, lighting control and the list goes on. In the past you would have different wiring for different jobs and lots of planning. And still get it wrong. Here's my proposal - use Cat6 cable for everything. We already know to use Cat6 for not only data, but also telephone. Why not extend it to everything. Already TV is going digital (Cat6), background music speakers could be run using almost any wire (Cat6), security wiring, automatic door openers, electric awning winders all require low voltage at a not too high current (Cat6, with maybe multiple wires put in parallel - there are 8 per run!). So, why not run several Cat6 cables to each room. You may end up with 40 Cat6 runs to a patch panel, but what versatility! The challenge to the experts is, what will not work on Cat6 (apart from 240V mains power)? For each obstacle to this idea, I'll look into it and try to remove the obstacle. Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Re: Smart Wiring for Dummies – Help Needed 9Aug 18, 2009 2:06 pm sounds fair, stick to Cat 6 to each room, however you may want a couple of standard coax points I think.. On the theme of "Smart wiring for Dummies" (And I am the worse type of dummy, the ones with an opinion ) I assume we all understand you get room faceplates (ethernet and coax), cabling back to a single point, can I further assume the items you will need down the track are: * the patch panel (where all the points centralise to) * the rack - to house your panel, switches and servers * Any servers to distribute the media - audio, data and voice - ( a big iPod) * You need to buy an IP Alarm system ? Where it gets interesting is the next step of integtration into; lighting, air con and other wiring systems. * Are we there yet ? Demolition has come and gone ! yippeeee..hang on that was months ago !! come on Mr Builder, dig a hole at least Finaly ! Hole Dug ! well done darren 20/06/2010. Slab is down ! Framing is complete 20/10/2010 we are progressing like a snail on heat - excited and determined but very very slow Steveo Re: Smart Wiring for Dummies – Help Needed 10Aug 18, 2009 2:29 pm I'll be chucking up a thread soon about cabling and you once I have worked out how much info you guys need to know about..... tho feel free to pm or post here some ideas/ suggestions so i can cover the basics in the thread so i donpt have to keep on posting the same info over and over and over agian... I'll also post some pitures of "patch panels" ie wall plates, 10" and the 19" racks i can install to give you really good info Kodiak Data Cabling onFaceBook Consult*, Design and Installation Data, TV, Home Theatre/ AV Cabling, Multi Room Audio, IP CCTV and Door Intercoms Ask for a Quote. *DIY DATA Cabling Is Ilegal Re: Smart Wiring for Dummies – Help Needed 11Aug 18, 2009 2:52 pm OK, first challenge presented. Question: Can you use Cat6 cable to carry a signal that would normally go on an RG-6? Answer: http://www.lynxbroadband.com/PDFs/lynx- ... etwork.pdf I'd use cat6 not 5e as it says you can use either but cat 6 has more tolerances for crosstalk elimination but i'd still rather have a seperate RG-6 anyday.. Thanks Pugs, my sparky holds the electrical contractors license for our company and is licensed to run data. I spoke with him just before and he doesn't think i need to run anything better than cat 5, so i am now wondering if his knowledge is getting a bit outdated. Where would i go to get a design done? In any case he will be doing the cabling because i will get the labour mostly free through work. Re: Smart Wiring for Dummies – Help Needed 14Aug 18, 2009 7:15 pm Here's a better link for devices that allow TV/video signals over data cabling (Cat5, Cat6, etc) - http://www.lynxbroadband.com/products/v ... r-cat.html. The devices are about $40 each and you will need one at each end. Not sure about the quality at this stage.
