Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 May 18, 2007 12:45 pm Hi gurus - now - this might sound sort of stupid - but can someone explain the basics. Such as:
What do you need for a basic home theatre set up? What does 5.1, 6.1, 7.1 etc describe? I've had a read through the posts and just not seen the basic info! Re: Home Theatre basics 2May 18, 2007 2:12 pm Ok... the 5.1 etc simply refers to the number of speakers in the system.
A 5.1 system has 5 speakers and a subwoofer. (eg- 2 front, one centre and 2 rear) A 6.1 or 7.1 is the same with one or two extra rear speakers. You can even have a 5.2 or 7.2 if you have 2 subwoofers! For a standard system you would need - 1. A Screen...Duh 2. An AV Receiver 3. Speakers, cables etc 4. DVD player, Set Top Box, XBox/Playstation, Set Top Box......etc depending on your needs and what you want to do/play/watch/listen to!! Built Porter Davis "Dromana" 2007. So the AV receiver is basically an amp? Re: Home Theatre basics 4May 18, 2007 2:59 pm yeah...it receives audio and video signals and outputs to the display and decodes and outputs the sound to the surround sound speakers...and stuff like that....
such a technically correct answer..... Built Porter Davis "Dromana" 2007. Re: Home Theatre basics 5May 19, 2007 9:01 am They actually call them receivers because they have AM/FM tuners in them. They call them A/V receivers because they also (now) process/manage both audio and video signals.
But, having stated that, I've always referred to them as amps myself, as I rarely use them for the radio! It was always mostly (and not that long ago, in my case, purely) for decoding surround sound and driving my speakers. While we're on the subject of definitions, if you were wondering what the .1 meant in 5.1 (or 6.1, etc.) and why .1, it is because although it represents another channel (and therefore why not call it a 6 channel system instead of a 5.1 channel system) it is the subwoofer channel or LFE channel. LFE stands for Low Frequency Effects (bass), and as this is usually only in the order of sound below, say, 250Hz - a fraction of the audible sound range, it was easy for them to simplify this fraction to 10% or .1 - Hence, the subwoofer channel is only .1 of a channel, therefore 5.1 = 5 full range speakers (cough, cough) + a .1 subwoofer channel. Thus endeth the lesson. We already paid for somfy motors for the blinds. The quote above was purely for “pre-wiring” so the blinds company can install the motors and blinds.
