OK, lets do a little dreaming here. Without actually having to sell the family home to pay for them, what speakers would you REALLY just love to have? What have you seen/heard that made you think (and still makes you think) "one day....one day I will have a pair of those....", even if it ends up being your mid-life-crisis gift to yourself (instead of a corvette)? For me, it is, and has been for years, a pair of Greg Osborn's Epitomes with the added woofer units (I actually have a photo of myself standing next to these at the Melbourne Home Entertainment Show from a few years ago), in the Bubinga finish. More than any other speaker I've come in contact with these still make me want to do what I can/need to to hopefully one day, sooner rather than later, be able to afford a pair of these. Check 'em out here: http://www.osbornloudspeakers.com.au/ For those who know of these, I know the Monuments (and Grand Monument Reference) are bigger and better, but they are also more than twice the price, and I'm actually trying to be reasonably realistic with this particular dream - gives me something to strive for... Re: If you could have any speakers you wanted..... 2May 15, 2007 10:59 am Re: If you could have any speakers you wanted..... 3May 16, 2007 6:20 pm Well the Duntechs are my dream speakers, and I was on the verge of putting an offer on a house which had a set of Duntechs playing away during he open houses. Talk about sell tactics!!!!
These days I wouldn't spend anywhere near that much money on a stereo. (on a yacht yes, a stereo, no) But as per another thread, I'm looking at building my own next set of speakers using 6.5" Peerless drivers etc with a single tweeter in a reasonable size cabinet. See pic. Then I can retire the Dali's to the B channel on the verandah beside the BBQ Steve Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: If you could have any speakers you wanted..... 4May 16, 2007 9:16 pm Glad to see people on the money with Aussie speakers.
I'm running an equinox system http://www.equinoxaudio.com.au Aphelion mains and eclipse centre and surrounds. A very good value system. Equinox Jupiters would be my ultimate. The equal of systems costing tens of thousands of dollars more. http://www.equinoxaudio.com.au/products/speakers/jupiter.php Re: If you could have any speakers you wanted..... 5May 18, 2007 12:06 am Well I have to say that I'm not quite up with what's available these days. Haven't auditioned any others because I know if I do, I'll start wanting them and begin a new cycle of upgrades with the accompanying $$$$$$$$.
I presently have an Aussie made combination of an ME850 power amplifier by Peter Stein driving a pair of Whatmough 201 Export Monitors. With a Marantz CD94 as my main source, it still sounds pretty sweet. I put this together about 15 years ago. I have had a listen to Clifford DeSouza's own Charmaine speakers and they are a really beautiful transparent sounding speaker. Here's a bit of info... http://www.audiosynergy.com.au/scanned/ ... o_1995.htm The first true audiophile set-up that I listened to that gave me the desire for quality audio was truly stunning...... an ME1500 amp driving two big 'doors' otherwise known as Martin Logan Electrostatics. I recall listening to a Suzanne Vega track, and man, she pretty damn close to holographically materialised in the room!!!!!!! With that all being far beyond my budget, I looked and listened until I arrived at my current system. Would seriously like to enjoy the lovely warm sound of a good tube amp one day, but I don't want to start teasing myself ATPIT. Ash. Re: If you could have any speakers you wanted..... 7May 22, 2007 5:30 pm Ash, What's the going price or would you expect to pay for a good valve amp?
I have such a basic system at present that I'm torn betwen going the hog with a valve amp etc or being real and just doing the all in one 7.1 tuner. Steve Re: If you could have any speakers you wanted..... 8May 22, 2007 7:24 pm Hi Steve,
I really wouldn't know (to be honest)! All I know is I've been into my local specialist hi-fi store Audio Synergy occasionally, and Clifford has some absolutely hi-end gear there. Most of the amps he has set up in his listening rooms are valve amps. The ME amp I have is a big beast with hi amp output and clinically precise delivery of anything you throw at it. The downside is, it can be a little harsh and fatiguing at times with certain discs. The valve amps I've heard though, are just silky smooth in their delivery, and I find them a bit more musical. I have toyed with the idea of getting a valve pre-amp, but I think a quality pre-amp will probably be at least around $2.5k. Other priorities at the moment, so I don't want to go there. If you're keen, go looking and listening at yoiur local audiophile store. Cheers! Ash. Re: If you could have any speakers you wanted..... 9May 23, 2007 9:43 am Thanks Ash,
Yes valve amps are certainly much smoother, so is vinyl but we wont go there on that front. I'll be doing the audio stores soon, but as you say, once we go in, it's the start of a long and... hmmm ... sometimes costly journey Cheer Steve Re: If you could have any speakers you wanted..... 10Jun 06, 2007 12:44 am are Krix speakers still held in high reguard? (were they ever?) Re: If you could have any speakers you wanted..... 11Jun 06, 2007 9:44 pm Hi Timbo.
Krix must still be held in some regard, because they are used in many current Village movie theatres. I heard a pair I thought were quite average right before deciding to by my first decent pair of speakers - Orpheus Arora 3s - nice. If you really want to know if they are good, listen to them and compare to others. A question. Im in Queensland and building a new home.
