Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Jun 27, 2009 6:53 pm Hi, First post but long time lurker. I have read a number of threads on this forum and now I have myself really confussed about what I need. I love tech like most men and I know what I want the tech things to do but no idea what I need to make them work. My new house will have a study, master bedroom, home theater and a living area that i would like to have wired. I want to be able to do the following the the above rooms. - Watch Foxtel - Hoping that I wont have to pay for 3 or 4 different recivers - Be able to watch movies from my PC in the other rooms - I have a PS3 which will be in the home theater and would like to have it wired and not wireless so I don't have lag I'm thnking of getting Tivo as it looks user friendly for my misses. I would also like to run speakers to the alfesco area and the pool area and listen to music from my PC through Itunes. I'm not worried about controlling the music as the Iphone has a pretty good app for that. I cuurantly have a wireless network and would like to keep that as we use our Iphone and notebook on it. I know what i want to do but just don't know what to ask for and wither to do it after handover or get my builder to do it. Any help would be great. Thanks Re: What do I need to ask for? 2Jun 27, 2009 11:43 pm to do it properly you need to ask your builders if you can bring in a third party cabler... with enough brains to pull all that off.. most should have a at least half an idea if not know mate who does.... First question: Where are you building? (perhaps you could populate your profile a bit). How much the all costs has a few dependencies, mostly regarding exactly what you want to do in each room - now and in the future. What video quality/standard do you want to distribute (eg. Foxtel) - HD or not? If you only get one Foxtel box are you OK with only being able to watch one channel at a time, no matter what room you are in (change that channel and everyone then watches the new channel)? Do you want to be able to control the Foxtel from the other rooms? How much control of the audio do you want from the other rooms? Re: What do I need to ask for? 5Jun 28, 2009 11:28 am Building in Tarneit and profile updated a bit. Not too worried about everyone watching the same channel at the moment as there is only two of us at the moment. When we have kids we may want to watch different shows. I will want HD for the HT room at least. When it comes to audio I can contol songs by using my iPhone on the wireless network. I would like to control the volume from the alfresco. I was thinking that I could have some sort of switch that would change the audio output from the alfresco to the pool area. Re: What do I need to ask for? 6Jun 28, 2009 10:06 pm man i had a whole thread typed out then i left to go sort out the washing machine..anyways I can't speak about multi room audio so i won't but for TV and networking .... Minimum requirements for "future" proofing your home FTTH Minimum requirement (IMO) 2 x Cat6 ethernet runs to each room you wish to have a PC or networked device, (includes: VoIP phones, Media sharing devices) 1 x RG6 Quad shield Coax for TV/ foxtel/ what ever signal distro'd. All wired back to a central place inthe house like a Garage.. and also running to that spot is a 32mm conduit (with pull wire) from the telstra conduit (even better) have yuyr installer run your current incming 2pair cable via this conduit then when you upgrade to FTTH they should be able to just pull out the old line while pulling in the fibre line.. You need: 1. Network runs/connections to every room you want or might want to install any connectable device (networked Media Players, PVRs, etc.) - including PCs. 2. RG6 Quad Shield: One for every possible TV/PVR connection - all run back to the central point for the TV Antenna. One (or two??) for each possible Foxtel Box (don't forget to run a separate telephone connection for the same Foxtel Boxes). 3. Speaker runs (x2) for each room where you want to install those 'Multi-Room' audio pairs of speakers - run back to where the amp(s), switch and sources for them will be located. 4. Video and audio cabling for distributing the Foxtel and other AV sources you want to watch on the multiple TVs. Most of this you will probably be able to get your head around but the Video and Audio stuff, especially for the watching of Foxtel etc. in other rooms, I reckon you will need an expert to design and quote on the setup to make sure it works... Re: What do I need to ask for? 8Jul 28, 2009 5:44 pm I use CAT5/6 for telephone as well so I can easily switch between a network and telephone outlet. Foxtel boxes generally need phone connections as well. You'd be surprised how much gear uses ethernet (CAT5/6) these days. HT Receivers, Blu-ray and DVD players, PVRs, Media players, gaming machines (PS3, Wii, X360), security alarms, home automation systems, remote control systems (like Philips Pronto), some air conditioners, not to mention computers, printers and network-attached-storage boxes. HDMI and component video extenders and IR also use the same cable. Some of the foxtel boxes also have a not-in-use ethernet port. If you have a single storey home, go for AT THE VERY MINIMUM 2 CAT5 runs to each of your entertainment spaces (where you will have a TV). You can add more later with a single storey home. On the bottom level of a two storey home, run 8 CAT5 runs to each of your potential entertainment spaces. It's much harder to add cable later and chances are that you will be able to use a small network switch if you run out of ports. You can't use a switch for video extenders, IR or telephone, including the Foxtel phone port. I work with owner, he/she is my man on the ground and I instruct them when to visit the site and take photos and I have other tools in the bag. 4 15265 Ardo That is so funny! We will use it to talk with builder. We also had idea of building duplex instead and seeking suggest ions. viewtopic.php?f=31&t=106744 11 13832 |
