Yep, I have found some other really lengthy discussions on the net. These are all really great threads of discussion in this forum, and I have picked up some very good ideas - so thanks again.

I think I will follow the suggestion of having and LCD and projector in the room to have the best of both worlds. As we are building a new house there are lots of other items to spend on, so putting in an LCD first and then a projector later on down the track makes sense for us now.

The kids will appreciate this, and I will just have to manage the risk of McLeod's Daughter's being watched in their when I want to use the room :shock:

I have been holding off getting a new tv, but the time is very near for exactly that.

Im usually not a big fan of the Sony brand, but this LCD Barvia 46" number that we saw on the w'end was sensational. Model was the KDL46XBR

It blitzed the Samsung and LG ones next to it. (we watched some free to air horse racing on them.)

But I will wait now till the xmas sales.

Anyone else got feedback on particular brands?

We would love to look at the new Pioneer Kuro range.. It's supposed to have the best black picture for any plasma on the market.
But at around $8k for the 50" model....I might have to wait a while

I also need to prioritise, what should come first, a Plasma for the family room or a Rear projection system for the Theatre???? Hmmm decisions, decisions...

Bluray is not a TV technology, but a Sony developed, replacement for DVD's it competes with another high definition disc called HDDVD

Hi Helen.

Blu-Ray actually refers to the type of disc you would have been watching. Blu-Ray discs and HD-DVD discs are the new next generation advancement to DVD. They offer True Full HD - High Definition video (1920 pixels x 1080 pixels - called 1080P) and higher definition sound than the Dolby Digital and DTS formats available on DVDs today.

The TV you saw - most likely an LCD - (or any other display device - plasma, projector, whatever) that can take advantage of this higher resolution, is generally referred to as a 1080P LCD TV (or 1080P plasma, etc.).

If you want to watch movies in True HD then you need both a Blu-Ray (or HD-DVD) player and a 1080P display device (TV). You would then need to buy the Blu-Ray (or HD-DVD) version of the movie to play in your new player.

Also, if you want to take advantage of the new sound formats (Dolby Digital Plus, True Master Audio DTS) on these next-gen discs, you would need reasonably new and reasonably capable audio gear (A/V Receiver, for one) to be able to reproduce these next-gen sound formats.

It's an exciting industry. It certainly keeps us busy and on our toes.

My 42" LCD uses 200W on full brightness. So the same as 2 100W light bulbs...

We got our plasma just over a year ago. When we were looking around, the LCD TVs couldn't possibly compare to a plasma in terms of sharp definition, and in my (admittedly very cursory) wanders around JB Hi Fi they don't seem to have closed the gap by much in the time since, either.

We are putting a home theatre room in our new house and at the moment the dream is to have a 65" plasma mounted on the wall; the room is 6m long and we want two rows of seating, so we don't want a screen that's too big (e.g. 100" projector screen) or we'll have people in the front row with ******* necks. I haven't yet done all the calculations to figure out viewing distances and angles and so forth, but I'll get to it.
