Ok - seeing this thread has been seriously hijacked, I'll ads my two bobs wort.

I met a guy through a mutual friend a while back, and we started talking bikes (the kind with engines).

I'm hoping that you might be able to help......

We had our house pre wired for 6.1 plus 2 out door speakers. We now seem to be having problems with getting a system that suits? It may be a little difficult to explain, but I'll try anyway.

It has been wired with 2 at the rear, 2 a little forward of this (around ear level I guess?) and 2 at the front. The problem we are having is that everyone's trying to sell us 5 speakers that are one shape and another 1 (centre) that is a diferent. The way it has been wired we should have 6 the same. Only then I have been told that if we don't have the centre speaker it won't work?????

They have all advised that we should do 7.1. So my question is then why would the pre wire guy have said to go with 6.1.

Would it be just as easy now to down grade to a 5.1? Would the wires that have already been laid be difficult to change over?

I'm really confused so any help would be greatly appreciated.

6.1 = 7 speakers. So that would be 4 at the back and 2 at the front plus a sub? No centre.... that's odd!
7.1 = just adding a centre
5.1 = still adding a centre, and forgetting about a set at the back
The majority of stuff is 5.1.

I'll give you as much detail as I can and hopefully will clear some of this up for you.

Firstly. I'll define the different configurations:

5.1: The first surround sound setups for home, both the older Dolby Prologic and the newer digital formats (Dolby Digital and DTS) were 5.1 channels/speakers. 5 Full range channels (Front Left, Front Right, Front Centre, Surround Left, Surround Right) and the .1 Low Frequency Effects (Subwoofer) channel.

6.1: After this they introduced a Rear Centre channel, giving us 6.1 channels, and expanded the Dolby Digital and DTS formats to included this Rear Centre with Dolby Digital EX and DTS ES.

7.1: They then decided to split the Rear Centre channel over 2 speakers (surround channels are supposed to be more ambient rather than being a directly focused sound source, and spreading the Rear Centre over 2 speakers (now called Rear Left and Rear Right) increases the ambient effect), giving us 7.1 channels. There is no more information in the source sound format, so at most your movies can have a 6.1 channel soundtrack, it just means the Rear Centre channel signal now comes out of 2 speakers instead of 1.

Now, all of the A/V Receivers available from the shops today (the decent ones, anyway) are 7.1, but you can choose not to setup the Rear Left and Rear Right channels and just go 5.1 (you must setup the Surround Left and Surround Right channels for 5.1 or 7.1).

For any surround sound system to be even reasonably effective you really need to have a Front Centre speaker setup, and for DTS it is essential.

Lesha, it sounds like your home has been wired for 7.1 (as it sounds like there are wires run for all 4 surround speakers), but perhaps a wire for the Front Centre has not been run as your installer might have assumed that you are going to put your A/V gear at the front centre of the room (in sone sort of cabinet or stand) and you can simply plonk your Front Centre speaker on top of it (I know a good installer would have consulted with you to ensure how exactly you wanted to set up your system

What else has been installed? What else do you plan to/want to install?

Don't necessarily be concerned with the actal 'shape' of the speakers. Typically a Front Centre speaker is a different shape and orientation to the rest (they are almost always of a horizontal orientation).

Sounds like you might have not yet had enough of the right type of information/consultation. Where are you? What are you doing with this room?

Thanks so much for all your help, you are 100% correct that I am sooooo confused! lol

We also got installed the wires to hang our plasma on the wall, 3 foxtel points and a extra TV point, 2 outdoor speakers for the alfresco.

We're in Tarneit and its all been set up in the theater room.

I think by having a look at the diagrams that i'm happy with the 6.1, but my only concern with everything is that this isn't where our wires are. So will it be difficult to change now?
