Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Jun 19, 2009 3:12 pm Hi everyone... I want to install a 5.1 sound system - but ONLY want to install cabling in the walls for my two rear speakers. So, on one side of the room (where my TV and AVR sit), I want two wall plates near the floor, and at the rear of the room, two wallplates high up (where I'll mount the rear speakers). My builder quoted $77 "per speaker point"... That seems to indicate it costs $154 *per speaker*.... So, to have my two rear speakers cables (with wallplates), it'll cost $308. This seems a bit excessive to me.... (they charging $62 per data point, which is better... I thought it'd be cheaper to install audio cabling!). We are paying $378 for running cable with banana plug wall plates... just easier for builder to do it.. What is another $300 on $300k?? That said, if it's the only thing this tradie is supplying/installing then there needs to be some consideration for driving out to your place twice to complete this piece of work... So, to have my two rear speakers cables (with wallplates), it'll cost $308. To me, $77 per speaker point is the same as $77 per speaker location, i.e. point at which there is a speaker. I'm not sure why you think it'd be double per speaker? It makes no sense to quote that way. Re: Speaker cabling costs... my quote from the builder 6Jun 21, 2009 12:17 pm I saw it as "per point"... being "per wallplate installed" (i.e. one on each length of the cable). I'm just very pessimistic, as whenever I get quotes for things from the builders - they always seem hugely excessive (so I was just preparing for the worst). If it's only $77 per speaker, I'll definitely get them to do it... if it's double that, then I'll probably just get it done after handover... (or get the electrician to do it while he's onsite for a much cheaper price!). I'm assuming they didn't have a dedicated speaker guy come out to install the cable, and they'd have one electrician/data cabler do the work (as I am definitely getting the house networked, no matter what). Re: Speaker cabling costs... my quote from the builder 7Jun 23, 2009 1:10 pm Hi everyone... I will now follow up with the outcome, and why I was so confused! They quoted me "$77 per speaker point", which as it turns out, really is just "per speaker" - so it's going to cost $154 to cable the two rear speakers. I'm much happier with that. They also quoted "$62 per data point".... But this truly is "per point". So, if I have a network cable reaching from the lounge to a bedroom, they count that as two points, not "per run". So it's $62x2 for the cable. I'm doing four network cables back to a central point, so that's $62x8 ($496 in total). Re: Speaker cabling costs... my quote from the builder 8Jun 23, 2009 8:00 pm As i mentioned its the "Price of Convenience". Like with many home building items.. maybe cheaper to do later but could you be bothered to do it then.
