Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Jun 18, 2009 9:06 pm G'day all, I am building a new house and am after a bit of advice, i'll start with what I want to achieve. I want to have 2 foxtel boxes feeding 4 rooms (2 rooms downstairs (media room, family room, 2 upstairs (master bedroom, lounge room))), and to be able to select either box to display at any of the rooms and have full remote control. Downstairs I want a bluray/DVD player in to feed the media room and TV room. I also want 2 speakers to the alfresco and 2 speakers to the dining room. Upstairs I will place DVD player in each room. The equipment I have is a Denon 7.1 amp - no HDMI - 2 Zones I need to know what I need from the automation /AV switching point of view to achieve the above. Many Thanks Matt Re: Home automation and Home theatre advice 2Jun 19, 2009 12:31 pm no expert on foxtel wiring but I believe you can can have one box feed to the entire house and then select which ever channel to watch in which ever room with the correct hardware I'm still workig on the actaul how but i believe it can be off the one box.... it is also called Smart wiring... also instead of one dvd player in each room use either PC's, popcorn hour machine type devices or a HTPC in the HT... have a central file server which stores all your movies in one location then just use the network to access them. Include the ability to control the devices (sources) - IR. Looks like you are really into the genuine Multi-Room AV realm here... Re: Home automation and Home theatre advice 4Jun 19, 2009 5:31 pm Gday Rod, I intend to do something like this myself, idea is to have all components in one place and feed to other rooms, will a system such as Elan do HD TV an assume that I can store DVD on some type of device/server same as music? Re: Home automation and Home theatre advice 5Jun 19, 2009 7:03 pm We'll be using Foxtel Multiroom for this -- actually having multiple Foxtel IQ and IQ2 boxes, so that each room can watch/record whatever they want. The lounge and theatre get IQ2 devices (for the HD channels) and the bedrooms are getting normal or IQ boxes. Because we have cable, we only need a single antenna point in each room for this. Re: Home automation and Home theatre advice 6Jun 20, 2009 10:58 am Elan can certainly do HD, albiet via Component Video - I don't believe they have a unit that does matrix switching of HDMI in/outs yet. There are HDMI matrix in/out switches, although they are more industrial and lack the user control options (ie everything is switched at the box - no connecting of other controls like keypads or even remotes). Re: Home automation and Home theatre advice 7Jun 25, 2009 9:17 pm All, Thanks for replies to date, all helpful in putting the pieces of the puzzle together. Does anyone know much about the Cat5 AV extenders and Cat5 Remote extenders ? From what I can see if you run Cat5 (cat6) to each room with a couple of runs, you can then connect up what ever devices you need . do these types of devices work well ? are there any negatives to these devices. Cheers, Matt Re: Home automation and Home theatre advice 8Jun 25, 2009 9:29 pm never even considered them (cat5 av extenders) TBH, couple of Cat6 at least one RG6.. that covers anyting you would want to put over it really. central file server and foxtel distro'd to every room.... either TV, PC or "media" device where ever i dont see the need for them. remote extenders are a god sendand even a low end instlal I'd put them in or at least one more Cat6 run and if i use i t do if i don't ..i don't Kodiak Data Cabling onFaceBook Consult*, Design and Installation Data, TV, Home Theatre/ AV Cabling, Multi Room Audio, IP CCTV and Door Intercoms Ask for a Quote. *DIY DATA Cabling Is Ilegal Re: Home automation and Home theatre advice 9Jul 28, 2009 6:22 pm I'm running a Kordz HDMI extender for Foxtel. It's an interesting bit of kit. The extender works even without power, though not as reliably. You need to turn your devices off (as you should for any HDMI cable plugging and unplugging) before connecting this device to make it work reliably. Before you turn the devices on, make sure the power to the extender is definitely on (the extender will be lit without power if you have a device in standby). Then it seems to work very well - no loss of picture quality, even with HD. Re: Home automation and Home theatre advice 10Aug 01, 2009 6:52 pm I have just bought one of these devices for splitting foxtel into 8 points. http://www.jonsa.com.au/products.php?cP ... 9&id=1829# You put a diplexor at the end of each point to split the Sat / Foxtel from the FTA. Can also re-feed a Foxtel / DVD signal, etc by plugging the above into an RF modulater and using the RF in point on the Loftbox http://www.jonsa.com.au/products.php?cP ... 69&id=1801 Hope this helps, jamestheoz Building Standards; Getting It Right! 1. optional, you can but normally just use the earth from the main switch board 2. should be enough but the distance determines voltage drop - sparky should work it… 1 28812 Versaloc is a mortarless besser block system that still needs a properly engineered footing.
