Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Jun 13, 2009 7:16 pm Hi guys
Looking for some advice regarding where to put the projector in my future home theatre room (currently building). I mainly want to decide now so that I can get all the wiring/cabling put in the right place up front - particularly since we have double brick walls so it won't be easy to conceal them later! The HT room is 5300mm x 4500mm wide and the screen will be fixed on the short end (i.e. the depth of the room is 5300mm). I had been thinking of concealing the projector in the ceiling with a projector-lift, but i'm now thinking that maybe it would be better to just wall mount it at the back of the room - above where all the equipment will be housed - so 5300mm from the screen. I haven't yet decided on what projector to buy and won't be doing that until the house is finished. It will be a Full HD projector but I don't have any particular preference between LCD or DLP. Also, I'm thinking of getting a 'Cinemascope' screen, so 2.37:1 rather than 16:9. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated! Brickwork is starting early next week and I'm meeting with the electrician to confirm our electrical plan (location of ppoints, cabling etc). Thanks in advance! Adam Re: Where should I put my projector?? 3Jun 15, 2009 12:07 pm Well, you've got the general layout right, but I don't think you'll be able to simple aim to mount the projector on the rear wall until you know what screen size you're going with and what projector you want. You absolutely need to know these two things before you can start working out where your projector may go. Re: Where should I put my projector?? 5Jun 15, 2009 4:08 pm Hi Jason. With a room depth of 5.2m, I'd say a screen size of 110" - 120" (if you really want the 'big screen' effect) would work well, depending on how close to the back wall you are sitting. However, even if you go with a 110" screen I reckon you will struggle to fit in a DLP projector in that depth, so I advise looking at LCD projectors (unless you really want a DLP then you will need to restrict yourself to a 100" screen at the biggest). The Epson TW3000 is really good value. It is a good sized room though, and 110" in there would look great... Re: Where should I put my projector?? 6Jun 15, 2009 9:43 pm Thanks for the responses guys! Assuming I want to go for the largest screen I can...and acknowledging that it's very much dependant on the projector I get etc - would it be a safe bet to put all the cabling etc to that back wall and then, if necessary, chase it to a point on the ceiling depending on where the projector needs to be mounted? Also, do you have any suggestions for effective window coverings for those two windows which are both 2100mm x 800mm? Thanks again! Adam Re: Where should I put my projector?? 8Jun 16, 2009 7:30 pm Rodda Hey Adam. Is it a single-storey place? Hey Rod Yep, it is - well, more or less. It's split level with the master bedroom as a 'loft', but the home theatre room will have nothing above it. In that part of the house, the ceiling height will be 3150mm. Cheers Adam Re: Where should I put my projector?? 9Jun 17, 2009 10:24 am Well, even though those ceilings are higher than what is practical for a Home Cinema, as long as you can get into the roof above the Cinema then you will have a fair bit of projector placement flexibility even after the house is complete. Re: Where should I put my projector?? 11Jun 18, 2009 1:52 pm High ceilings are bad for sound because they increase how pronounced any echo or sonic reflection is, and if you need to mount the projector to the ceiling you either have a really steep angle of projection or you need to get extension poles for your mount and therefore have a less descrete mounting... Re: Where should I put my projector?? 12Jun 18, 2009 2:16 pm Thanks Rodda. My ceiling in the Theatre is 3.6 m high! I will buy a commercial mount and then get a long pole made, so it looks nice. Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Re: Where should I put my projector?? 13Jul 07, 2009 3:57 am just my opinion but if you are going to the expense of installing HD then what you should be doing is letting the projector decide where its installed....honest its true every projector has a throw range and an ideal position relative to the image size, the easiest way is when you buy your projector look for something with a short-ish throw and get the sales man to do the work. Ask him the the idea distance from the screen the projector should be. Also don't forget to mount your projector upside down. It natively throws the image stright out so if you invert the image, (installing right side up) the quality will reduce. As long as the room ratios are all ok, high ceilings aren't a problem at all. Those places make good recording places because the artists etc. want their recordings to sound like the great halls they are recorded in (usually done with larger ensembles like orchestras). Suitability for home cinema is not the same thing at all... As long as the room has suitable ratios, a high ceiling won't be detrimental to sound. try entering 7m x 5m x 4m into this - http://www.bobgolds.com/Mode/RoomModes.htm and look at the curve you get in comparison to 3m x 3m x 3m...... Who cares that in the second scenario the cieling is 1 metre shorter (which is a massive difference)?!! The rest of the room makes the shorter ceiling irrelevant!! Re: Where should I put my projector?? 17Aug 07, 2009 9:26 pm jcjuice pfftt.. sorry, you can say what you want. Oh, thanks for that. Go ahead and build your room with high ceilings and enjoy that more noticable sound reflection from it, which will undenyably occur (unless you put something on that ceiling to absorb the sound that radiates at it instead of - by default - letting it simply reflect down to the listener to arrive at a slightly later time than the original sound directly from the speaker). Oh, hang on, if you've got a magic maths equation the reflection will instantly disappear... Re: Where should I put my projector?? 18Aug 20, 2009 8:43 pm Soooo...! Following on from my question about positioning the projector, can anyone help me with a related query? I'm planning on concealing the cabling to the projector (chased in the wall probably) and want to keep it all neat and tidy both at the source end and at the projector end, e.g. with face plates either end. Soo...what cabling do I need to make sure I have running to the projector other than power and HDMI? Is it worthwhile having a 2nd HDMI run (for projectors with 2 x HDMI in)? Should I bother with component or anything else? OR...should I not try to pre-empt the cabling and 'conceal' it later on in the cabinetry/rack which I intend to put at the back of the room?? Finally (and very slightly off topic) what do you think are the minimum cabling requirements to the point where all my equipment will be, not including power (so CAT6, RG6, etc)? I plan on having at least: an AV receiver; a NMP; Fox and possibly another device (multi-room audio may be housed there)... Any thoughts would be very much appreciated. Cheers Adam if you have a switching device like a AVR - you wouldn't need 2 HDMIs into the PJ inmho. Unless you want to connect the PJ directly to the sources, ie- one HDMI into a blu ray player and the other HDMI into a DTV tuner or something like a TiVO... It may be worth running some wiring for a trigger if your PJ has that function. Why are you thinking you need CAT6? CAT5e should be fine, and it's a bit cheaper too. And I guess that's the same answer for the Cat 6...plan on streaming HD media fairly regularly and moreso in the future...so figured the extra bandwidth was worthwhile? But maybe it's overkill? 0 1547 Are you saying that these consultants are involved at key-points of the building, and perform site inspects at the stages, or only after building is completed to point… 4 8983 That's very helpful, thank you. I was mostly interested in knowing if a spoon drain requires a specific slope, but I appreciate the extra information. 4 3919 |
