Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Jun 08, 2009 7:24 pm OK! Did a search and can't find exactly what I needed to know, so ...... Looking to build a Tribeca - 2 storey home with M3etricon. Requirements: * Cat5e gigabit network based in study and connected to Sitting, Family, Rumpus, Outdoor Room, Bed 1 & Leisure * Audio distribution based wherever and connected to Study, Sitting, Family, Rumpus, Outdoor Room, Bed 1 & Leisure * Video distribution based in Rumpus and connected to Study, Sitting, Family, Outdoor Room, Bed 1 & Leisure Reasonings: * Network based in study because I have 2 servers and 2-4 desktops in there * Video based in Rumpus as I will have Media PC, HDTV & Pay TV in there (use PC for DVD playback now, possibly a Bluray player to be added in later on) Wishlist: * "Discrete" audio setups to Bed 2, 3 & 4 so that each room can plug in their own source (MP3 player etc), only to be heard in the same room * Include Home Security / Cameras / Video Intercom as a Video source * Remote front door unlock from within house (after watching Intercom) Floor Plans: Ground Floor: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ 1st Floor: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I first attempted to design LAN, Audio and Video discretely as seperate networks, but then heard about Hills Home Hubs and Starserve and from my limited knowledge, I think they might be more flexible and cost less overall (cabling etc). Also started to find that I wanted the majority of the same rooms to have the same features, and seemed like a lot of doubling up to have 2 sets of speakers in each of these rooms. As part of the design process we get to sit down with a sparky and go through exactly what we want, with the option of doing some things "on books" and others "off", but I would like to have my head around my options. Do the resident experts here think the Hills Home Hub or the Starserver are going to do what I want, or are there other alternatives that you would recommend ? Also what sort of $$$ would sound ballpark for a job like this, including all cabling, labour and materials ? Thanks. Built a Tribeca 44 with the Big M Sales Accept 15/06/09, Contract Signed 24/09/09, Site Start 23/11/09, Slab 11/12/09, Frame 12/01/10, Roof 20/01/10, Lock-up 30/03/10, Fixing 30/04/10, Handover 27/08/10. Re: Distributed LAN, Audio and Video - Hills Home Hub? 2Jun 09, 2009 9:51 am I'd say for the LAN simply treat that separately (no need to try to have it use the same 'hub' components as it is purely for transporting PC data). Do your Cat5E/Cat6 cable runs and get an appropriate router/switch for the central location (Gigabit, wireless included). There should be nothing more to it. For the Audio and Video, as you want to have both in most of the rooms you've mentioned then the neatest and smartest option is some sort of multi-room audio and video matrix controller, eg. the Elan S8.6AV: http://www.elanhomesystems.com/productdetail.asp?id=16 This box gives you everything (except the actual speakers and keypads) in the one piece of equipment - including all of the amplifiers for 6 primary zones plus sub-zones off each primary zones. For what you get it's very reasonably priced too, and has more features than pretty much any similar device even near it's price. For the Audio and Video there would be a fair bit of cabling to run - you'd want to be sure the people installing it knew what they were doing... Re: Distributed LAN, Audio and Video - Hills Home Hub? 3Jun 09, 2009 10:11 am also no point having the network temrinated into the office... just have the servers there and cable back to a central point i mean once they are on the "lan" it won't make a differnce to where the cables are terminated... I presume that with IR receivers, you can change the Austar channel, or stop and start the DVD from the comfort of your bedroom, despite the decoder box or DVD Player being in the Rumpus ??? @Rodda: That system looks good - I like the ability to add iPod docks too. @Pugs: The main reason I was looking for termination of the LAN in the Study is because I would like to keep all hardware - servers, network printers, router etc - that I can plug directly into my switch in the one room and therefore not need to cable points for them at all. I am looking at a comms rack to house all the gear it is far more convenient to have all the gear in the one cabinet and all at arms reach. Also we've closed off the study with a wall and double doors so it will all be out of sight. Thanks, Michael Re: Distributed LAN, Audio and Video - Hills Home Hub? 10Jun 10, 2009 2:27 pm Hi Michael. I deal directly with the Aussie importer/distributor for Elan (based in Sydney). The Elan S8.6AV has a RRP of AU$3499. The basic Elan Z100 keypads, which let you have some control of sources as well as the standard system controls (eg. volume, source selection) are AU$399 each. On top of that, add in your speakers (eg. Paradigm CS-60R @ RRP AU$399/pair) and some sources and you have a system. Cheers, Re: Distributed LAN, Audio and Video - Hills Home Hub? 11Jun 10, 2009 3:48 pm Hi Rod, Thanks for your responses - all good! So if I'm building up a virtual quote and I want to do the following: * Audio/Video distribution based in (and distributing to) Rumpus and connected to Study, Sitting, Outdoor Room, Family & Leisure * Basic control of all devices in each room - Audio/Video source & volume * 5 pair basic 6" or 9" roof-mount speakers (Rumpus has 6.1 SS) What sort of $$$ should I expect to pay for hardware ? What sort of $$$ should I expect to pay for wiring ? Are there any other add-ons (iPod docs etc) that might be useful ? Would you travel to Ballarat to do the install Thanks a lot. Re: Distributed LAN, Audio and Video - Hills Home Hub? 18Jun 12, 2009 1:49 pm The funny thing is that I have very good friends on the Sunshine Coast and will be doing their Home Cinema when they build their next house (they seem to build a new one every few years... ) - although I don't think it will be this year - and in order to do so I'm going to have to drive up there (so I can bring all of my tools and a fair bit of stock I keep or source down here), so we've decided when the time comes we'll make a family trip out of it Re: Distributed LAN, Audio and Video - Hills Home Hub? 19Jun 12, 2009 2:09 pm Rodda The funny thing is that I have very good friends on the Sunshine Coast and will be doing their Home Cinema when they build their next house (they seem to build a new one every few years... ) - although I don't think it will be this year - and in order to do so I'm going to have to drive up there (so I can bring all of my tools and a fair bit of stock I keep or source down here), so we've decided when the time comes we'll make a family trip out of it doing the same thign for friends of mine when they build in Qld too Kodiak Data Cabling onFaceBook Consult*, Design and Installation Data, TV, Home Theatre/ AV Cabling, Multi Room Audio, IP CCTV and Door Intercoms Ask for a Quote. *DIY DATA Cabling Is Ilegal DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair Brilliant - thanks so much for that.
