Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Apr 25, 2009 6:15 pm Hi all, We have a few questions which we're trying to get answered so any tips you can provide would be gratefully received. When installing an HT with floorstanding fronts and a sub-woofer to the side do most people have the wires showing or do they pass them through the walls so that the speakers are flush against the wall with no wire showing? We're considering wall mounting our TV with an HT unit below the TV with the components and centre speaker. We'll have 2 floorstanding fronts and the sub to the side. We'll also be putting in centre L and R and rear L and R speakers as in-ceiling speakers. Would the wiring for this be a lot easier if done during the build or is it not much different if done after the build? I remember Rodda saying in another thread that with Colorbond rooves putting in wires can be more awkward than with tiles, and as we are looking at a steel frame house with a Colorbond roof we're trying to work out what needs to be done at the time of build vs. later. Would this apply equally to just speaker cables (which is what we would be running) as opposed to the HDMI, CAT5, power and other types of cables that others run for their HT setups? Re: Wiring before or after build - steel frame & colorbond house 4Apr 26, 2009 2:00 pm Pugs at build at frame stage as with steel frames you need special gromets installed to protect the cables.. also to ensure you are seperated from electricals and other services It is still possible and easier than timber frame as you would only need to put the grommets in the frame near the ceiling and drop the cables down (timber you would need to drill through the frame and also drill through the noggins which can be very hard, steel frame doesn't have noggins like timber frames).... The only thing you couldn't do is run the cables sideways through the wall as you wouldn't have the grommets but you wouldn't normally need to do that with anything except for the plumbing and you wouldn't be able to do that with timber frame anyway. Thanks wakeboardandy. So are you saying that running speaker cables sideways from the centre of the wall (where the receiver would sit) to the L and R front speakers, and to one side for the sub would be hard to do after building as these would be sideways through the wall? Re: Wiring before or after build - steel frame & colorbond house 6Apr 26, 2009 4:26 pm purpleninja Thanks wakeboardandy. So are you saying that running speaker cables sideways from the centre of the wall (where the receiver would sit) to the L and R front speakers, and to one side for the sub would be hard to do after building as these would be sideways through the wall? yes that would be hard, but my front speakers will be floor standing so didn't see the point of running cables in the wall for those. Re: Wiring before or after build - steel frame & colorbond house 7Apr 26, 2009 4:33 pm wakeboardandy yes that would be hard, but my front speakers will be floor standing so didn't see the point of running cables in the wall for those. Thanks for the info Our front speakers will be floorstanding as well. I know it's a personal preference decision but do most people show the wires for floorstanding speakers and sub, or do they put the cables behind the walls? Also the info you posted about steel frames was incorrect, so not everything you post on here is written in stone. I wasn't questioning it to the Nth degree for the sake of it, I was just curious as to the reason behind the explanation. If we end up not getting all our cabling done during the build it would be good to know if there were other factors that would come into play if we wanted to have work done post-build, and especially if there could be a situation where we couldn't have some things done after the build. Sorry if I caused offence - I was just curious and I like to know the reasons behind things.
