Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Apr 21, 2009 8:11 pm Hey guys, I am debating installing a projector in my home theatre in our house once we build it. I have a unique attribute to my home theatre which I am trying to figure out how to work around so we can have our projector. On the picture attached, at the north side of the room we have a fish tank which will be taking up the wall, the fish tank is designed to be viewable by both sides and I'd like to keep this option available at times as I am planning to eventually install a plasma in the room as well and use it as a small lounge when needed (i.e. home theatre sometimes, lounge sometimes). The room will be 4.4 metres (north to south) on the diagram, and 4.07 metres from the east wall to the west wall (in the niche area). Just have a few questions: 1.) Any ideas on how I can stop the light from the fish tank from coming into the home theatre? I was thinking of having cabinet doors of some sort or blind i could draw across the fish tank with a blackout cloth. 2.) how much clearance do I need from the walls? The ceiling is a coffit ceiling so their is a drop down on the edges, i am assuming i will need to leave a bit of space from the dropped down ceiling otherwise we'll have issues roof mounting the proejctor. How far in should I put the hdmi points and power point? 3.) Based on how far in from the wall we go, what size max do you guys recommend for a projector screen if it was mounted in the niche? Any help would be appreciated! I don't want to buy a projector in advance so I can see what is out at the time when I am purchasing. Nav Re: Home Theatre - screen size/where to mount projector 2Apr 23, 2009 9:51 pm Sorry, but just bumping hoping someone has ideas on how to black out the fish tank (i don't want anything that looks too obtrusive on the ht side of room and where (how far from screen) I should ask to get the hdmi run to & power point. Any help would be appreciated, just trying to finish off my electrical planning. Re: Home Theatre - screen size/where to mount projector 3Apr 23, 2009 10:22 pm Hi Nav, I don't have any ideas on how to block out the fish tank, however being an avid fish keeper myself, I wouldn't suggest to put the tank on the main wall of the theatre room due to the noise factor. I understand the visual appeal of the tank through the wall as we wanted to do the same into our theatre, but the noise was a consideration so moved it to a wall in the living area. Just a thought. Ben Hey Ben, We actually have no other room in the house where we can put the fish tank due to the setup of the house or we would have. We hired a consultant to design/setup the fish tank for us and he told us that the fish would be ok with the noise. Our home theatre would not bein use 24/7, probably one day a week for a few hours only. I was a bit concerned that the bass would affect the aquarium's glass but the consultant we hired said he has setup many aquarium's near subwoofer's, etc, and said his company would stand by their 15 year guarantee on the aquarium regardless of position of the tank. Nav Re: Home Theatre - screen size/where to mount projector 5Apr 24, 2009 7:00 am blockout blinds over the tank should work. the length you are using for the screen is only a little bit smaller than mine (7cm!). I am having a 108" screen and will be seating at the back of the room. Screen is 2.4m (2.56 including frame). I assumed your niche is much wider than that, so screen should fit nicely. Thanks Andy, the niche should be large enough. I'll go for a 108" screen I think as well. I was hoping someone here would have an insanely clever method of concealing the fish tank blockout blinds is all I can think of that will work as well was just hoping on something that would blend in better with the room. I bought a epson tw3000 that can throw a 108" screen from 3.25m. Re: Home Theatre - screen size/where to mount projector 8Apr 24, 2009 9:41 am I actually prefer LCD to DLP projectors. Atleast when I bought a dlp a few years back when I was in Canada any DLP projectors under the cost of 5k I could see the rainbow affect which drove me mad. At the moment I'm just concerned about getting the cabling right - i'm going to worry about the actual projector when their is actually a house .
