Can anyone recommend one that can record & still watch a show at the same time with inbuilt digital tuner? Looking at spending < $800
We have a Samsung LED tv if that makes a difference to the type of recorder we'd be best to buy.
TIA

TIA Re: HDD Recorder 2Apr 20, 2009 11:48 am Basically, you need a PVR (Personal Video Recorder) - aka HDD recorder - with 2 digital tuners in it (High Def or not) if you want to record 1 show while watching another Live show at the same time. If the unit only has one tuner then it may be able to watch a previously recorded show while recording another one at the same time (mostly comes down to software). Get one that also plays other forms of media files (avi, mpeg, divx, etc.) and you will have more options too. There are many out there by many brands (including the likes of Sony, Panasonic LG, etc.), with varying feature sets... Lots of research to do... Re: HDD Recorder 3Apr 20, 2009 1:31 pm i picked up a Topfield Standard Def pvr from **** smith for under $300 --> http://www.dse.com.au/cgi-bin/dse.store ... iew/GH5707 It has two tuners, plus allows you to install applications to add functionality, does all of the record while watching, record and watch what your watching stuff and i think its great. All I need now is a HD job for my plasma and I'll be set. But great unit and the support available for the brand seems really good. Looking at spending < $800 A TiVo is only $699 and has the best user interface, hands-down, of all the PVRs I've ever owned/used. The Home Networking Package is also only $99 after you buy the TiVo, which allows you to transfer recordings to/from the device. I'd really love to sell the Homecast 8000 I have now to get a TiVo instead. Re: HDD Recorder 7Apr 25, 2009 3:13 pm I'm a big fan of the Tivo myself. I just got the Home networking package and I can transfer all recordings across to my PC over the wireless network and convert/record them onto DVD's. The native format of the Tivo is DVDR I think so the conversion to DVD using VideoRedo is loss-less as it doesn't have to re-code the file. There is also an expandable HD available soon that is 1TB so that will also solve the undersized 160Gb HD that comes in the Tivo. The ease of use and quality of the Tivo is why I bought it - I don't want to buy a recorder and and find it full of bugs and have to download patches all the time like some of the older PVR's. I'd also be carefull of recorders that claim to skip adds as apparently the Freeview (which is a croc) will not be compatible with this. Re: HDD Recorder 8Apr 25, 2009 6:05 pm I heard of a WD 1TB addon HDD for the Tivo which is very reasonably priced in the US. Hopefully it will come here as well. With twin high def tuners and the simple interface, it is simply unbeatable in my opinion. Contrary to popular belief you can get some off the asking price...I got mine for $599 with the wireless thingy included from JB Hi Fi. 160gb hard drive is woeful so I'm hanging out for the 1 Tb hard drive. Re: HDD Recorder 10Apr 25, 2009 9:06 pm Here's a link to the drive I was referring to. 1TB WD addon. http://www.westerndigital.com.au/en/pro ... riveid=609 In the US it's RRP is $199 Re: HDD Recorder 11Apr 26, 2009 4:36 pm Just found this: http://www.smarthouse.com.au/Accessories/L2T4C3J9 The 1TB drive with a US RRP of US$199 will have an AU RRP of AU$499 !!! Re: HDD Recorder 12Apr 26, 2009 9:24 pm you can't beat foxtel IQ2... nothing else competes as nothing else can record the foxtel channels and FTA channels via a TV Guide.. Re: HDD Recorder 13Apr 27, 2009 8:26 am okay if you have over $100 a month to pay for tv... how can anyone justify that much money, especially when its full of bloody ad's i love having fox on, but its just so expensive for what you get Blog - http://snakedr.blogspot.com/ Build Thread - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=12084&p=307406#p307406 Status - PCI 15/10. I think in terms of interface Beyonwiz and Tivo have probably got it all over the Toppy now though. mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: HDD Recorder 15Apr 27, 2009 8:54 am billdsl okay if you have over $100 a month to pay for tv... how can anyone justify that much money, especially when its full of bloody ad's i love having fox on, but its just so expensive for what you get I only pay about $65 a month... for basic and sport which also includes the HD Sports channels and the iq2 box... I think it is great value for having live sport. I wish more sport came over to foxtel from FTA, as FTA fill it up with ads. Live sport on Fox they only put ads between quarters and halves etc... FTA you have an ad after every goal and normally a delayed telecast also! but if you didn't like sport then it would seem a waste of money.. Re: HDD Recorder 16Apr 27, 2009 11:56 am They should just halve the cost of it, get 3 times as many subscribers, and pay tv might finally get up and running well here Blog - http://snakedr.blogspot.com/ Build Thread - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=12084&p=307406#p307406 Status - PCI 15/10. Re: HDD Recorder 17Apr 27, 2009 1:01 pm Personally I'm actually doing all of this recording and watching other media with a Media Centre PC (2 tuners, HD, the works), but it's not a game for everyone... P.S. I do not and never have had Foxtel - mostly for the "too expensive vs what you get" reason... Re: HDD Recorder 18Apr 28, 2009 4:30 pm You'll be able to get the 1TB add-on for the Tivo for $299 http://www.smarthouse.com.au/Home_Cinem ... e/M4W5K9H2 Seems like this will be a significant differentiator from the Foxtel IQ "Foxtel is shunning the introduction of additional storage claiming that content providers such as Sony, Warner and Universal would not support a 1 Terrabyte drive because it would impact DVD sales. However, Hybrid Television has taken the opposite view and is now marketing a 1TB Western Digital expander drive for their TiVo digital recorder" Re: HDD Recorder 19Apr 28, 2009 5:28 pm It's a nasty business when free to air channels and content providers start trying to dictate what features PVR's will have and how they will be sold. Freeview is a perfect example - it is simply a way of making sure that if manufacturers of PVRs want to be compatible with the limited features of freeview then they have to disable any way of skipping advertisements. The Tivo is 'Freeview ready' which is why the add skipping feature has been disabled is Australia. All this kind of nonsense does is drive people away from mainstream products and download content illegally or copy. That said I'll always try to avoid the PC route because it usually makes things over complicated and requires far too much mucking around. I find the HTPC solution far too cumbersome. Is there any way to turn it back on (like making a DVD player multi-region) just using a hack/code? |
