Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Apr 07, 2009 10:05 am Hi We're looking at finally purchasing a screen & projector for the theatre room. Room size is 4430 W x 6370 L. Seating will be about 4m from the screen. (H has set-up a bar at the back of the room). Budget for the projector is about $2000. Hoping we can get something decent for this price. Will consider spending more if necessary. Screen - what size based on sitting 3.5 - 4m from screen? Most likely get a fixed screen. Budget for this - not sure - have seen screens but not sure what too look for. I'm guessing we'd spend around $400 - $800 (hope that's reasonable). Suggestions muchly appreciated. TIA. Rose Re: Please recommend a projector & screen :o) 2Apr 07, 2009 9:18 pm Hi Rose, For round $2700 the Epson TW3000 is a bargain. Full HD 1080P and loads of cool features. For around $1500 the Benq W500 or In focus X9 ar good 720P HD projectors! $2000 is stuck in the middle at the moment but I think the stretch to the Epson is definatley worth it. Re: Please recommend a projector & screen :o) 3Apr 07, 2009 10:02 pm mattwalker Hi Rose, For round $2700 the Epson TW3000 is a bargain. I just bought this projector on the w'end and quality is amazing and that is just on my wall. I got it for 2500 from HN. I will be ordering a projector mount and 108inch screen from selbyacoustics.com.au in the next week or so. If you use the code DTV08 you can get 20% off. Certainly a bargain if you compare the prices of this size screen at other shops. Toni (h2b) has the screen and says it is excellent. I will also be sitting 4m from screen (but that is pretty much the back of my room). Re: Please recommend a projector & screen :o) 4Apr 07, 2009 10:14 pm Do yourself a favour. Get the DLP Infocus X10. You wont be disapointed. Re: Please recommend a projector & screen :o) 5Apr 07, 2009 10:24 pm I've got the TW3000 set up, and it's stunning when matched to a blu ray player. My screen came from the guys at Selby Acoustics, and I'm very happy with the quality - not that I've got anything to compare it to. We are sitting about 3.5m from the screen, and went for the smaller 90 inch version. Don't go too big, unless you like sitting in the front row at the movies As someone else has already said, the projector price is around $2,500 if you shop around. Remember to factor in a good quality ceiling mount as well. TW3000 Cons: It's big. It's white. It has one year warranty. TW3000 Pros: It's very quiet (this was really important to us), it's got loads of adjustment, it has multiple inputs (2 * HDMI), it's easy to setup, it's 1080P, it's a bargain for the money. Watching a movie and noticing things you've never seen before is a terrific experience. Cheers Re: Please recommend a projector & screen :o) 6Apr 07, 2009 10:32 pm perryr TW3000 Cons: It's big. It's white. It has one year warranty. It is actually small if you compare it to other 1080p projectors out there... and it has a 2 year warranty.. Did you get your projector mount from Selby as well? I like to sit around the middle of he cinema, and by THX calculations the sweet spot of a 108inch screen is to sit 3.8m from it.. So I will be a little bit further back and could probably go for a 110inch or 115inch screen.. My own test, showed me I could comfortably have a 120inch screen from 4m but I will compromise and go for the 108inch screen. Re: Please recommend a projector & screen :o) 7Apr 07, 2009 10:48 pm Yep as Andy said we've got the 108 inch screen from Selby's. I love it! Like Perry I can't compare it to anything else as we've never had a HT before. Here's a link for it - viewtopic.php?f=34&t=15039 Happy at Home Re: Please recommend a projector & screen :o) 8Apr 07, 2009 10:50 pm I stand corrected. 2 years warranty on the TW3000. Regarding the projector mount, I bought the mount when I bought the projector. Probably paid too much, but the mount is an awesome piece of quality work - with fittings for every projector, and adjustments every which way, and hidden cables, so I don't mind too much. This is the one I got: http://www.omnimount.com/consumer/product.aspx?ProductId=a917c156-4d88-477a-89bb-fce72a95d27e&CurrentId=7.2.2 (edited to answer the question about the mount) Re: Please recommend a projector & screen :o) 9Apr 07, 2009 11:00 pm Tam also has one of our 108" screens in her theatre! Re: Please recommend a projector & screen :o) 10Apr 07, 2009 11:06 pm ggitt Do yourself a favour. Get the DLP Infocus X10. You wont be disapointed. I have the Benq W20000 and I would always buy DLP but thats me! For an LCD this projector, 1080P, $2500 good contrast and lumens ... It is really hard to beat! Yes I also preferred the DLP and looked at a Benq.. but I would have had to have a tiny screen due to its long throw distance. Whilst the LCD's look amazing now as well, the DLP I watched at BPP was like it was in 3D, the picture is awesome. I think it was the Benq w5000. Re: Please recommend a projector & screen :o) 12Apr 08, 2009 12:39 am ggitt Do yourself a favour. Get the DLP Infocus X10. You wont be disapointed. the only projector i am recommending atm unless you suffer from rainbowitis! brilliant and matched will the 108' from Selby gives stunning results.... i have sold 4 in the last week and down to my last one, time to reorder Re: Please recommend a projector & screen :o) 13Apr 08, 2009 8:35 am If you're considering the InFocus X10 the you really should also consider the BenQ W5000 for the extra couple of hundred dollars. The biggest difference is the contrast - 2,500:1 (X10) vs 10,000:1 (W5000) - for me the extra $ is clearly worth it. Hey Wakeboard, which projector did you manage to get for $2500? If it's a 1080P one it would have to be the cheapest one on the market... As far as screen size goes, 100" is a good middle of the road size for that sort of seating distance, or maybe even 110" if you really like big. Having a room that's over 6m long is more than enough for a DLP projector if you decide you want to go that way. One criticism I have of the Selby screens (you certainly can't criticise the price...) is that they are more fiddly to assemble and mount than the big brand ones (Screen Technics and LP Morgan), whereas part of the R&D that the big guys put into their product is in making them as easy to install as possible and give the best and most attractive end result. Re: Please recommend a projector & screen :o) 15Apr 08, 2009 8:56 am Rodda One criticism I have of the Selby screens (you certainly can't criticise the price...) is that they are more fiddly to assemble and mount than the big brand ones (Screen Technics and LP Morgan), whereas part of the R&D that the big guys put into their product is in making them as easy to install as possible and give the best and most attractive end result. I'd have to agree Rodda, mounting it was a pain in the backside, and assembly was a little time consuming. The other thing is that there are tiny gaps at the corners where the pieces join. Nothing you'd notice unless you are looking for them. Still, in terms of value for money (and mine was less than $250 for the 90 inch), I'm not complaining. Cheers Re: Please recommend a projector & screen :o) 17Apr 08, 2009 10:52 am Andy, I was wondering how much you got the screen for? H2B's HT room looks great, I cant wait for mine to look something like that. One other question, if i plan to mount the projector from the ceiling, do I need a power point on the ceiling for the projector? Wont a powerpoint on the ceiling look funny? Also, can someone let me know where abouts I should put the powerpoint? In the middle of the room, or more towards the back where the seats will be directly beneath? Thanks in advance! Idiots are fun, that's why there is one in every village! - Dr. House - Re: Please recommend a projector & screen :o) 19Apr 08, 2009 11:07 am Hey Wonderland, I know that the 'boys' in this thread will help you out more than me but we had our power point put in the ceiling centered to where the screen was going to be. What we didn't take into account was the the screen would not be centered on the wall......our couch is rather large so the screen is to the right a bit. When our electrician came over a few weeks back he actually removed the powerpoint and it now sits behind the projector so it looks nice and neat. We have to patch up the ceiling now but I'm having some of my ceilings repainted in a few weeks by PD so I'll get them to touch that up too A few people who are building at the moment with PD have asked for the powerpoint to 'float' in the ceiling and then they'll get it hooked up after handover. I think this sounds like a good idea! Here is the link for the screens from Selby, we have the fixed 108 inch - http://www.selbyacoustics.com.au/storef ... 0&c=156455 Yep it took me a little while to put the screen together about an hour and a bit. I don't have any gaps in the corners though. My DH tightened it up after I had finished. But installing it wasn't a problem. We screwed two long pieces of timber onto the wall and then fixed the screen to them. Can't say it was hard Happy at Home Re: Please recommend a projector & screen :o) 20Apr 08, 2009 11:13 am mheloy2 Hi, What is the optimum throw distance of TW3000? I could not find it in ProjectorCentral Thanks The owners guide can be found here: http://tech.epson.com.au/downloads/RedirectLink.asp?ProductID=TW3000&Email=&DownloadID=5905 I've included the relevant page here - as you can see, there's loads or room for adjustment.
