If you’re only looking to stream audio to one zone then the Sonos, Squeezebox, and Duet, all do a great job, although the Squeezebox/duet requires a more expensive solution for storage or a PC running for music storage this is because you need to run its server software. Both Sonos and Squeezebox can be controlled via iPhone so it makes adding remotes more flexible. IMO if you’re going to run multiple zones then the Sonos will be a more flexible solution, especially with the amplified zones. Re: Sonos system 4Mar 27, 2009 10:45 am Both the Sonos and Squeezebox systems access music from a PC (or like device) - neither have their own HDDs built into them... Both are good. And today, I went to a shop in city and they sell Sonos system. The salesperson suggested me to buy an iTouch ($399) instead of the Sonos zone controller ($899). It will save some!! First off you need to have some device to rip and store the music files, or you can stream it off the internet. To be able to store the music for playback you'll need either a computer, or a NAS drive. Many modern HT processors also allow you to playback your music files, likewise many of these HT processors have several zones which allow audio to be played from several speakers simultaneously. Products like Squeezebox, and the small Sonos Z90 require additional amplification to be able to playback the audio, this needs to be factored into the setup costs, the larger Sonos Z120 has inbuilt amplification so just requires a powerpoint and speakers and away you go. Then it comes down to flexibility, zone control, and what you feel you want to achieve. Remember you can always use your iTouch with an iPod dock into your HT processor to store and stream your music until you decide which way to go. Thanks for your point of view Metricon Amira Re: Sonos system 9Mar 27, 2009 9:05 pm kikin Thanks for your point of view You're most welcome. I've been down this path myself, like most things you're not sure which way is the best, most look too difficult, and then there's the expense let alone the dilemma of ripping and storing all your music. Streamed audio is a lifestyle thing, some love it, others can take it or leave it. These days I stream both audio and video, coupled with Foxtel, I very rarely use any of my DVD or CD players. I've trailed several products over the years, and those that I've settled for I'm very happy with. When we entertain the background music always goes well, especially when we start playing music trivia. Being able to get nearly any song or artist virtually instantaneously legitimately via the internet, listen to new artists or albums without the need to first purchase them (albeit compressed) is great. The best of the lot IMO is just having music you enjoy on random play. Once you know the basics, the rest is easy.
