Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Mar 23, 2009 12:54 pm As the title says, I need help! DH went and bought all the bits and pieces he wanted to kit out the HT the other week, and we're really thrilled with all of it. I know absolutely [i]nothing[i] about this kind of thing, so I'll look at the different things and tell you what they are, in case you need to know, and it makes a difference!!! First of all, the problem is that the picture doesn't fill the whole screen when we play dvds through the PS3, which is what we are using as the dvd player in that room. The screen is 102inches. The projector is a Mitsubishi something (can't see the model!!! - it's sparkly navy blue and was expensive! ) It has a Bose surround sound system. I know DH has tried to adjust the image on the projector, but that doesn't work. It has this laser grid thing which self adjusts, and that fits the screen perfectly. When we put Foxtel on the pic fills the screen, but not dvds!Do we need to adjust something on the PS3, or have we missed something on the projector, or is it even possibly the sound system????? Thank you HT gurus! Solidarity, not solidity.......The Lexicon of Life Re: Picture size on screen - help!!! 2Mar 23, 2009 2:50 pm How doesnt it fit? Sounds like you have the wrong output selected on the DVD player (EG, 4:3 when it should be 16:9) Re: Picture size on screen - help!!! 3Mar 23, 2009 2:57 pm When you play a dvd (on the PS3) the picture doesn't fill the whole screen, whereas when you put Foxtel on, the picture fills the entire screen. The image isn't distorted, or anything, it's just smaller than the screen, so you see the white of the screen around all 4 sides of the image. The screen has a black frame around it, and you don't even really see that when the whole screen is filled.Did I explain that better? Sorry, like I said, I'm not familiar with any of this stuff!!! My guess (not owning a PS3, but I do have an Xbox 360) is that Foxtel is set to HD (1080) output, but the PS3 is not. Thus, the projector is showing you the standard definition output from the PS3. You might want to check the configuration of the PS3 to ensure that it is outputting 1080i or 1080p (p preferred). Re: Picture size on screen - help!!! 5Mar 23, 2009 3:11 pm You need to set the PS3 to display on a 16:9 or WideScreen device. There are settings for this in possibly more than one location (in the menus). I don't know exactly which one will do the trick (as I don't have a PS3 myself, nor do I know how yours is currently setup), so you'll have to experiment a bit. Re: Picture size on screen - help!!! 6Mar 23, 2009 3:17 pm Thanks so much for your help, guys - I'll pass all of that info on to DH...I'm sure he'll work it out (as opposed to me - no chance of that!!!! ) Solidarity, not solidity.......The Lexicon of Life Re: Picture size on screen - help!!! 7Mar 23, 2009 8:53 pm Petal, when you say the DVD picture doesn't fill the screen, are there a black bars at the top and bottom of the screen? If so, that can be considered normal, as cinema screens are not 16:9, it's 21:9. I'd say that Foxtel HD would broadcast in 16:9, and probably adjust the movie pictures to suit. I'm sure that Rodda will correct me if I'm wrong. Cheers Re: Picture size on screen - help!!! 8Mar 24, 2009 9:37 am Like Perry says. DVD movies will be displayed in a 235:1 format. which means there will be black bars top and bottom, the picture is the same width as the screen you have just not as high right? Foxtel and free to air digital TV will be in 16:9 widescreen format which would fill the whole screen. Unfortunately there is not much you can do to have the movie fill the whole screen when watching dvds unless the movie is presented in 16:9 format. check the back of the dvd case, it will say 16:9 or 235:1 if its the latter then you will have black bars Hope that helps edit: this may help to explain things http://www.anamorphiclens.com.au/ Re: Picture size on screen - help!!! 9Mar 24, 2009 12:42 pm Thanks, guys! No, I don't think there are black bars at the top & bottom (but then again, it's quite possible that there could have been & I just didn't notice them!!! ) DH was out last night, so I'll get him to look at these suggestions and have a play with it! DH went in to settings on the PS3, and selected "automatic", which then asked if you wanted 1080p (which I remembered Djelibeybi had suggested) and now we have full screen pics! DH is in there watching one of his fave movies - Endless Summer II (ES I is his other fave ) and I almost felt like I was in there surfing!!! Sensational!!! Now PS3 games will look better too aswell 1 1927 You have no photo with your post. Best I can say is to remove an A&L flyscreen don't be afraid to distort the frame almost like a trapezium.
