Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Mar 11, 2009 5:08 pm Hi guys,
Sorry, should have done my research sooner, have to tell our CSC today the exact place that we want to place a power point on the ceiling in our theatre room for our projector. We are getting pre-wiring done for home theatre including 5.1 sound. Our theatre room is 3610 wide and 4550 long. We are having the screen on the 3610 wall. We will not be buying our equipment until handover (Jan 2010) however we need to place the power point in the correct place. How far back from the screen should we place the projector? (we could go up to approx 4.4m back if required). What are the projector standard screen sizes for a room like this? I would envisage us sitting on couches approx 4000 from the screen. Any advice would be appreciated. Built in now city 2009, now moving to the country to embark on another build. Check out our previous blog http://ourpalazzo.blogspot.com/ Re: How far from screen to projector? 2Mar 11, 2009 7:11 pm It will depend on the projector you buy as to how close/far away you need it. But is will be somewhere in the vicinity of at least 3 metres. What you could do is get them to put the power and video cables into the roof at around 3 metres and then drill through the ceiling yourself. That way if it is a little off, no one will know but you! Re: How far from screen to projector? 3Mar 11, 2009 7:42 pm EVERY projector is different!!!
No such thing as one size fits all I am afraid Re: How far from screen to projector? 4Mar 11, 2009 11:27 pm yes quite true every projector is different, as you would be researching a good one to buy now. next time you got into hardly normal or good fries grab the model numbers and do some hunting online for your projector.
then find out the 'throw distance' thats the distance the projector needs to be at to provide you with a good clear picture to the length of the thing its projecting on (normally your nicly painted drywall) yes most good projectors have adjustments, but the distance is important. here's a good example of some research on a projector and the specs+details you need: http://www.ausmedia.com.au/panasonic_PT_AX100.htm also what i am currently using. cnet often has a monthly update of what projectors are the go, take note of bulb replacement costs and *where to get them from* http://www.cnet.com.au/projectors/lcd/0 ... 717,00.htm also remember that a 2.5m screen is umm lets say HUGE so you would want to be AT LEAST 4m away from the screen or your gonna get a sore neck! -Nathan 2nd-Fix | Blog Building with Desyn Homes previously with the insolvent Endeavour Homes Re: How far from screen to projector? 5Mar 12, 2009 8:07 am Surely there is a particular distance that covers over 90% of projectors. This way people can plan in advance.
Also, what happens when you want to update in a few years time to a new projector. If you've used on extreme for the particular project you purchased to start with, you may have to put a new hole in your ceiling! Would a position of 4 m back be within the throw distance range of most common projectors? If so, we can nominate it as the Homeone standard distance. Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Re: How far from screen to projector? 6Mar 12, 2009 8:15 am With most new LCD projectors they have a big range for their throw distance. I am having my powerpoint 3700mm back and my room is 4.14m long.
For example most new LCD projectors can throw a 100inch screen from 3m. Re: How far from screen to projector? 7Mar 12, 2009 9:54 am We set ours at 3.5m and I think that will suite most models.
I looked at a couple of popular models and a throw size of ~110" (or was it 100?) were all about 3.5m Re: How far from screen to projector? 8Mar 12, 2009 10:02 am Casa2 Surely there is a particular distance that covers over 90% of projectors. This way people can plan in advance. Sort of. As suggested, LCDs have a fair range you can place them in. Again, what should be done is some research into the median throw distance of some of the more popular projectors and average that out. Or, if it's a single storey house I say don't worry about it and simply get a live power point terminated inside the roof somewhere off to the side of where the projector will likely end up (it doesn't matter too much, as the projector's own power cord can give you 1 to 2 metres worth of play here...). Re: How far from screen to projector? 9Apr 09, 2009 4:36 pm Is it better to have the projector further away from the screen or closer? We will have a HT eventually, but it wont be for some time. And I also need to put a powerpoint on my ceiling!! Our room will be 3.9x5.9. I dont know whether I should just take a punt and put it 4m away from the screen or 5m away? All this stuff is SO confusing!!!
