I Would like that, but seriously probably never will Re: Theatre room 5.81 x 4.43 22Mar 05, 2009 12:03 pm Rodda Basically, unless you have a really, really good reason for grouping your brands, just pick the best piece of equipment based on it's merrits... Or if you have a brother that works for a company that makes amps and speakers and you can get them at redicoulus prices, that is also a very good reason! Thanks ever so much for all the advice Basically what I am looking to get (please excuse me if I miss some crucial part of the system ) is the screen, the projector, some piece of equipment I think a reciever?? and speakers to be only in that room though, something simple that I am able to use. Another couple of questions, I cannot believe how silly I am going to sound, but can you watch normal TV via a projector? Also, to watch a DVD, where does the DVD player sit?? Technology is definately not my thing... Cheers Re: Theatre room 5.81 x 4.43 25Mar 05, 2009 10:02 pm OK, so you're just talking about picture and sound in the one room - the room that will be (possibly among other things) the cinema.
For the picture you need a projector (you said you wanted to go this way) and you should use a proper screen with it. For the sound you need something to decode the surround sound signals from your DVDs etc. and something to power your speakers (that's what an amplifier does). This is where the AV Receiver comes in - it does all of this and a fair bit more. It can, and usually does, act as the central hub in your audio and video system (don't bring up PCs guys, Tillie will not be interested in complicating matters with one of those...). You then need gear like a DVD or perhaps Blu-Ray player (for obvious reasons), a Set-Top-Box or perhaps PVR (recorder) for watching TV (digital) signals, and any other type of device that is used for delivering pictures, sound or both. -- So yes, you can watch TV on a projector (HDTV looks magnificent on HD projectors...). The equipment can sit ANYWHERE in the house. It's simply a matter of cabling. If you want to be able to control the gear from a room or anywhere where you can't actually see it (and therefore the IR remote(s) won't be able to see the gear to control it either) then you simply need to install an IR repeating kit - and cable it also - which is not difficult or expensive. Re: Theatre room 5.81 x 4.43 26Mar 06, 2009 8:23 am Thanks very much Rodda for your clear and simple explaination I was dreading looking at the topic this morning as I was quite embarrassed asking a few of those questions
As you have stated that the equipment can be anywhere in the house, I would imagine that the closer it was the easier with the wiring etc?? as this shall be done once I am in the house. With what you have suggested in regrads to equipment/installation, for what I am after does the $5-7k still sound like a reasonable budget? Cheers Re: Theatre room 5.81 x 4.43 27Mar 06, 2009 9:27 am Hi again Til.
The biggest difference the location of the gear can make is if the gear is in the theatre itself and is in view then you won't need an IR repeating kit. Other than that, the only other difference is the further away from the theatre the gear is the slightly more expensive the cabling gets (as there is more...). As far as budget goes, $5K-$7K is on the money if you're going for lower-end gear (still good brands, just their 'entry-level' stuff...), especially if you don't want a HD projector. A HD projector will add more than $1500 to the budget (hence my earlier suggested budget of $7K-$8K if you included a HD projector - which I still highly recommend if you're going to go to the trouble of doing everything else)...
