Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Mar 01, 2009 6:53 pm Were converting a second lounge to a theatre room in a house we are looking to build. IE close in a wall, add a door, etc.
But my question is on the cabline side. Eventually we will probably have 7.1 and a projector. Input would be a media centre extender 99% of the time (might add a bluray or such later, but we already use media centre that I setup). Is it worth paying for appropriate cabling to be installed now? I know it will be easier but how much cheaper? Full cabling would be... Power to roof for projector HDMI run CAT6 Speaker cabling (appropriate for 7.1) 4x power We will eventually have a proper amp, so anything but a HDMI run to the roof seems like overkill to me, as it will all go into the amp anyhow. Short term it will be a media centre PC/extender, so again just HDMI. Are there black wallplates that would work well for a theatre room? white would be a bit too visible especially for the speaker wallplates. My thinking on the speakers would be a triple point at the front and a double at the back, so that we dont need 3 wallplates per end, easier for the sparky, etc. Basically, is it well worth getting a volume builder to add this to their plans? or do it later? EDIT: Im used to dealing with them in offices, eg you can just push up ceiling tiles to get to this stuff... cant with a house ceiling. So would I need a hole in the roof with cables dropped through? or just get the mount installed and add projector later? or how would I do this? Re: Cabling a theatre room 2Mar 01, 2009 7:03 pm I am considering doing the same thing as Hellman trying to sort out if we do it now through the builder, or do it ourselves after discussion with the SS (if we have an obliging SS whom will let us). Re: Cabling a theatre room 3Mar 01, 2009 9:31 pm should be fine to do it now... or jsut get the holes drilled and pull wires run then you can do what ever later on... other then the power.
cheeaper is a ersonally perspective.. ie cheaper now you have easy access to the site any and all breakages are easily fixed Now as opposed to later on.... 2 storey places are a different matter though... Re: Cabling a theatre room 5Mar 02, 2009 9:02 am I'm just running cat 5e but a few years down the track if I want to run cat 7 or whatever the latest technology is, I can just use the cat 5e cables to pull the new cables through. It cost me $78 for 305m of Krone cat 5e solid core cable. Re: Cabling a theatre room 7Mar 02, 2009 7:27 pm My current thought is...
* Universal projector mount w/ the unused parts given to me * Power to roof for projector (standard plug so its not wired in) * HDMI from mount to wallplate * Speaker runs through wall to plates (yes I know, more connections are bad, but Im no audiophile) to suite 7.1, probably one plate at the front one at the back with appropriate plugs for 7.1 (less plates, but no long cable runs) * 4 power points to main location (there wont be 3 or more high power stuff, so a power board will do if ever needed) This will allow me to slot in my current 5.1 easily, add a projector and my HTPC/extender easily and its set. Allows some room for upgrades too. I could use a HDMI switcher if ever needed aswell. Screen I would add later, something permenant (no need to be retractable) but Ill see whats best in terms of cost/performance when the time comes.
