Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Feb 18, 2009 1:30 pm Hi guys. Love this site and the wealth of info here.
Will be building a new place fairly soon and on a tight budget. Don't mention wireless. I am currently using wireless for networking and it just doesn't cut if for streaming media to the lounge. Also using an wireless AV receiver to send Foxtel into the main bedroom and the picture is so fuzzy. This is what I am thinking - I don't think I will need any sort of system or patch panel for network cabling. I just want cabling to run from 4 rooms(lounge, rumpus, main bed,2nd bed) to the ADSL router in the study. - TV antenna to the same 4 rooms + study - Foxtel point in the lounge for IQ or IQ2 so need 2 RG6 cables to the roof for future hookup. I want to be able to view Foxtel in the main bed or any other room for that matter but not overly concerned if I have to change the channel from the lounge. After reading some previous posts I believe it is possible to run an analogue signal from Foxel via RG6 to the roof and feed into the tv amplifier so any tv point can tune into signal. Is this true? - Can't see any reason why I would need any more than 3 phone points to kitchen, study and lounge. Any reason why this setup wouldn't work and how much I should be budgeting for? Re: New home tv/networking on a budget 2Feb 18, 2009 1:41 pm i wouldn't even install more then 2 Phone outlets and use cordless phones...
as for networking do what you need to now but run ducting or pre drill and run pull wires now and when you want to cable up those rooms the job is alot cheaper later on Kodiak Data Cabling onFaceBook Consult*, Design and Installation Data, TV, Home Theatre/ AV Cabling, Multi Room Audio, IP CCTV and Door Intercoms Ask for a Quote. *DIY DATA Cabling Is Ilegal Re: New home tv/networking on a budget 3Feb 18, 2009 6:30 pm MIcks,
Make sure that the cable you plan to lay can support HDTV!! You will kick yourself if the Rg6 cable only allows SDTV or worse... There are different types of RG6 so find out what is on offer. Not sure what system you are thinking of using to relay the video? Also is VOIP an option rather than running phone lines? Most ISP offer a voip package these days, no line rental, no call fee's unless calling mobiles or international. VOIP setup would need voip enabled modem/router and voip phones plugged into network points rather than traditional phones in phone points. Might cost slightly more to setup as you will need a bit more hardware but you would be saving line rental + calls each month. I'm fairly sure all calls are like under 20c reguadless of how long you talk to the other person Kodiak Data Cabling onFaceBook Consult*, Design and Installation Data, TV, Home Theatre/ AV Cabling, Multi Room Audio, IP CCTV and Door Intercoms Ask for a Quote. *DIY DATA Cabling Is Ilegal Re: New home tv/networking on a budget 5Feb 19, 2009 8:18 am These days 2 phone points (which are standard) is all you need.
1 in the kitchen for cordless base station. 1 wherever you put your ADSL router. Maybe another for a security system if needed. Re: New home tv/networking on a budget 6Feb 19, 2009 8:31 am Currently using a cordless phone with 2 extra handsets, but was thinking we need one line in the kitchen as this is where the cordless phone base will be mounted. One line to the study for ADSL and one to the lounge for foxtel. The Foxtel one isn't really necessary as I'm currently using a foxtel wireless phone device to hook up to a separate point.
I can see in the short term I would only need network cable from the study to the rumpus and the lounge for gaming and media. I'll ask how much I can save by just laying pull wires to the bedrooms for future hookup. In regards to streaming TV I'm only interested in Analogue using UHF and the current TV points at the moment. When a cheap HTDV streaming method comes along I guess I can look into this. It would be good if there was some sort of cheap device that could take video/audio and turn it into a digital TV signal that could be fed back into the TV amplifier to them be picked up on any standard digital TV tuner within any room. Not sure about VOIP. I don't think VIOP can be used for foxtel and back to base alarm systems. Currently using Skpe for long distance phone calls. Billion have released a all in one modem router that also has Gig Ethernet, VOIP, N class Wireless, and has a secondaory Wan Input via 3G technology via a USB dongle "key" Kodiak Data Cabling onFaceBook Consult*, Design and Installation Data, TV, Home Theatre/ AV Cabling, Multi Room Audio, IP CCTV and Door Intercoms Ask for a Quote. *DIY DATA Cabling Is Ilegal Re: New home tv/networking on a budget 9Feb 26, 2009 2:48 pm Guys, I'm sorry if this is classed as spam... but I'm really into this kind of thing, and plan to cable and VOIP my place once I buy it (within the next few months).
In my case I'm buying an established home, so it'll cost more for me... yours will be cheaper to do since you're building from scratch. But I'm still curious how much it'll cost you. For VOIP stuff, it doesn't need to be expensive. For example, here's a cheap $15 ATA device for the MyNetFone system: https://www.mynetfone.com.au/offers/whi ... -specials/ For a VOIP plan, I use this: https://www.mynetfone.com.au/offers/whi ... aver-plan/ 10c untimed to any landline in Australia, and 15c per minute to any mobile in Australia (billed per second). No monthly fees. I have saved a LOT of money using the above plan... just wish I could get "naked" ADSL to avoid line rental! Of course, some ISP's offer included VOIP calls, or naked lines for ADSL2+.... in my case, I have the older ADSL1 so I can't get any of that (which is why I use MyNetFone instead). My new place will be in an ADSL2+ enabled area though - woohoo! (Again, trying not to SPAM, just showing you that there are some good options out there!)
