Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Feb 02, 2009 10:37 am Hi All
Just hoping to get a bit of help from all the wonderful people out there. We are looking at buying a 5.1 ch Home Theater system for our new Home. I have looked at various companies and models. What confuses me is the integrity of the voice quality when there is so much of a price gap amongst companies and models. I looked at Bose Lifestyle V20 valued at $3999 (RRP) and also Sony and Yamaha models priced between $500 to $1000. So, is it possible for all of you to share your experiences as to which one worked best for you or your relatives. Also please throw in some suggestions as to which one do you think will solve the purpose beautifully. PS: the dimensions of our Home Theater room will be 4.75m x 3.66m Re: Home Theater System 3Feb 02, 2009 12:22 pm Agreed with Ed.
Also call out whats important to you ie. watching movies or listening to music.... The only good thing about bose is its marketing.... don't do it! there's so many other options out there. and don't buy HTIB (Home theater in a box) buy your components and speakers seperately. I would spend about 75% of my budget on good speakers and speaker cables and the rest on an amp. also a secondhand higher end amp is way better than a new low end amp that may have functionality you would never use. cheers smeags. ---->Some say that a recession is when your neighbour loses his/her job while a depression is when you lose yours!<----- Re: Home Theater System 4Feb 02, 2009 12:46 pm Firstly, please don't buy Bose. The $3999 Bose system you mentioned would in all honesty not sound any better than a $1000 Sony or Yamaha system (with Bose most of what you pay is for the fancy RF remote and the name...).
Buy a decent A/V Receiver and a decent set of speakers from well known quality brand names and you should be fine. If you buy a second hand amp you may certainly get more oomph for your buck (if it's that extra oomph you really need), but with all of the current and emerging technologies in this space (Blu-Ray, HDMI 1.3 with Deep Colour Support, Video Up-Conversion...) you may find that in the very near future you will wish you had gotten a newer model that had one or more of the features like this in it... and got a warranty (just in case - you never know). It's not necessarily 'way better' to get a second hand amp - that would only be the wiser move in the minority (ie <50%) of cases... Re: Home Theater System 5Feb 02, 2009 12:56 pm oh that is interesting, our HT will only be a bit bigger than yours 5x4 so I'd be interested in knowing what you actually end up buying, it appears we are in the same budget range!
I was told by the HT guy in the shop to spend $1,250 on 5 speakers PLUS a subwoofer, PLUS $500-750 on AV thingy... we already have a good projector and screen for now... I think i should have mentioned about my budget earlier. Apologies, my budget is $3k to $3.5k, however if i can get a decent quality system for less than that, then i will be dancing as i will have spare money to spend on other fixtures. Rodd, if you dont mind, can you suggest the brand for AV recievers and speakers. I understand that secondhand woofer will be better however i have HDMI cabling and would want to buy something with latest technology. And thanks a lot for advising me about the Bose system as i was more than half sold for Bose system after seeing it in the showroom. Re: Home Theater System 7Feb 02, 2009 2:53 pm If you are patient, you can slowly build up your system like I am.
I've got 2 x 3 way floor standing Infinity's at the front. dicksmith centre speak + sub ($80 for both to tide me over until after the wedding). Sony amp which was free from a mate at sony. My Infinity's are AWESOME and I'm so glad I didn't go HTIB. We already paid for somfy motors for the blinds. The quote above was purely for “pre-wiring” so the blinds company can install the motors and blinds. That’s why we… 5 16252 Once you know the basics, the rest is easy.
