Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Jan 29, 2009 4:47 pm Hi All,
I have a room that I want to put a Projector with a screen. Only issue is that the room is wide but not that long, only 3.8m. I wanted 100in screen as a min. Is this possible or is the room not long enough? Also looking at 1080p projector. Any assistance would be appreciated. I do not have a brand preference and budget of around $5000. Re: Is my Home Theatre Room long enough 2Jan 29, 2009 4:58 pm Wait for the experts, but 3.8 m long room and a 100" projection screen doesn't sound good. I thing your screen will have to be smaller Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Re: Is my Home Theatre Room long enough 3Jan 29, 2009 7:37 pm I thought that might be the case. The room is 3.8 long and 4.6 wide. On one side of the room is a window and the other side the double doors to get in. Im at Pre Tender stage and this is the most important room for me so by the sounds of things it needs to be longer. If I extend the room another metre to make it 4.8 long and 4.6 wide, is this a good size?
I thought I would ask the question now before I sign the contract as its easier to make the changes now than be disappointed later Re: Is my Home Theatre Room long enough 4Jan 29, 2009 7:41 pm why don't you move the window so you can use the 4.6m length.
My room will be 4.2x3m and I will have either a 92 inch or 100 inch screen.. probably 100inch as I like things big and it fits in with the viewing angles recommended by THX. Even with the 3.8m as length you could have a 100inch screen if you seating positions are right on the back wall. Re: Is my Home Theatre Room long enough 5Jan 29, 2009 8:07 pm I thought about removing the window but the Sales Consultant advise against it only in terms of resell Value as most people want a window in every room.
I then thought about covering the Window and putting a drop down screen in front of the window but that means the back of the chairs will be near the door blocking the entrance. Not that big a deal but I have waited so long for this room I want to get it perfect. I asked them to put a raised floor at the back so I can have 2 rows of seats, 1 raised and 1 at ground level, but now thinking about it the room its just not long enough and the raised floor wont work in front of the door if I make the window the front. Thank you wakeboardandy. At least now if I dont extend I know it will work if I turn the room around. I have included a drawing of the design. Ignore the 1st floor as we have totally changed it. As you can see I have the Home Theatre on the ground floor. Any suggestions are welcome http://i713.photobucket.com/albums/ww139/mzCielly/manhattan.jpg Re: Is my Home Theatre Room long enough 6Jan 29, 2009 8:35 pm I too like you wanted a theatre room and wanted something bigger than what I am having.. but in reality I am building our first house.. I'm only 25 so have plenty of time later down the track to build my dream home...
I thought you may have been able to move your window to another spot. But you only have one external wall. I would just get rid of the window.. go without a window in the room.. I doubt it would hurt resale that much (in my house it might as it is small but your is a mansion! ).. most people these days want a theatre room and this will only increase in the future. I would then change your double doors to sliding doors, which is what I have done in my plan so I can have the seats right near the back. I also removed the two windows that were going to be on the south wall and just have one small one on the east side, I wanted no windows but my wife wanted one for resale as a study or 4th bedroom! See my plan below: http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff285/agardner5/floorplan.jpg Re: Is my Home Theatre Room long enough 7Jan 29, 2009 9:20 pm why don't you put the window on the wall it is supposed to be on but just a higher up window - like a modern high window. say 2mts wide, 500mm high but the bottom of the window is from 1.8 mtrs high?
You could put a projector under it if you got it high enough up. At least then there is a window in the room. Otherwise, have black blackout curtains permanently drawn over the window and have your projector come down from the ceiling say 10cm out from the curtain... Make sure its square when you build the house, then tack plywood or whatever over the top (paint the back black so it doesn't look weird from the outside). A couple of sheets of plywood nailed in could be removed in 5 minutes and small nail holes refiled.
Just thinking that it would give you options in the future. Building Upside down house in Wantirna VIC Current Stage: Procrastination... it's just all too hard.... Blog: http://thereluctantbuilder.blogspot.com/ Re: Is my Home Theatre Room long enough 10Jan 29, 2009 9:35 pm Is it possible to have the rumpus room as the home theatre - larger room and could be closed off and windows changed to suit - then either use current lounge as a small rumpus room or open up that lounge/leisure area as one open space liveing area? Re: Is my Home Theatre Room long enough 11Jan 29, 2009 9:44 pm Personally I would just move the doors! Put the screen where the doors are now and your chairs back near the window. This way you can just curtain out the window when you're watching something.
I would definately not block or remove the window as I do think for resale it would affect it as it could be a study down the track or a kids play room etc. You definately don't want to shorten your leisure area. I would put a small door or a cavity sliding door instead which can look flush right below the window of the leisure room in that gap. Depending on the door you get - you can make this look fairly discrete. You dont need big double doors to a HT or really any room for that matter This way you could even possibly have a 120" screen as you would be able to use the full 4.6m! If your that keen to make the HT a priority I would certainly do this as I think overall - your house design is great except as you've pointed out the orientation of the Home Theatre room is the wrong way Good luck and let us know what you decide to do! Re: Is my Home Theatre Room long enough 12Jan 30, 2009 7:23 am Honestly, in my opinion that room is not really suitable for a projector at all. The 3.8m width is really a very short distance to justify running a projector, and you can't go in the other direction using the 4.6m length (which is more like it) with the doors where they are - no matter how you set up, from the doors will either walk directly into the backs of the chairs or if the screen where there (drop down) someone could walk straight into it.
I don't think (and both Matt and I have always leant towards larger screen sizes than what some other so-called experts would suggest) 4.6m is a deep enough room (remember your actual viewing position will be a little closer than that) for a 120" screen. Perhaps a 110" would be much more comfortable. Either the doors should be moved or I would really consider the Rumpus Room for the 'Theatre'. At least in the Rumpus room your layout options are much more usable (even if you delete or change a window or two). You said you've been waiting a while for this room and want to get it perfect, and yet you seem to be starting from a way less than ideal point... P.S. For a budget of $5000 for a projector you have many good options for a DLP or LCD 1080P projector. Epson, Mitsubishi, BenQ, Panasonic all have good ones in this range... Re: Is my Home Theatre Room long enough 14Jan 30, 2009 5:40 pm Thank you for all your suggestions, especially Rod. I have some serious thinking to do. I will let you all know the outcomes but I must have a projector so I am very happy I asked this question as I now know, and have options.
