Thanks! I guess it depends on what is included. i.e. is it just a single coax, or two coaxes plus phone point? Re: Pay TV points - expensive? 4Jan 14, 2009 9:17 am Yeah to what Colsy said?
When we were doing our electricals our builder asked if we wanted f.oxtel points. We said no because we thought we'd never have f.oxtel. Then we got it. And it was free installation. Coaxes and a phone point. Apparently Foxtel are recommending that there are phone points at each outlet because eventually they will be needed. Best ring Foxtel and talk to them. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Pay TV points - expensive? 6Jan 14, 2009 9:20 am YSSIM Yeah to what Colsy said? Re: Pay TV points - expensive? 8Jan 14, 2009 9:38 am Colsy I may be missing something here but why do you pay your builder to put Foxtel points in when Foxtel will do it for free? I guess it depends on the installers you get, some leave a lot to be desired with their work ethics IMO, and secondly it's less hassle if building a two storey house to get the lower level especially cabled beforehand. Re: Pay TV points - expensive? 9Jan 14, 2009 9:40 am bobbuilder It's just a single foxtel point. We have to pay another $68 for the telephone point. Then IMO that is expensive. As Joles alluded to you should run two coaxes plus phone point to each Foxtel outlet, saves a lot of hassles afterwards IMO. But if foxtel install it, don't you end up with that plastic ducting stuck to your walls? I'm not sure what you mean by plastic ducting. Our point looks like a telephone point but with a round hole for the foxtel cable. In any case ours is behind the entertainment unit so you can't see it. We ended up putting one of those 6 socket powerpoint thingamajigs and a telephone point then the man just ended up putting another plastic plate thingy for foxtel. [sneakersss] Re: Pay TV points - expensive? 11Jan 14, 2009 9:49 am that does sound expensive.
joles - how does the 2 coax system work? Do the foxtel guys just tap into one of them somehow? After 4 years - we're in! Re: Pay TV points - expensive? 12Jan 14, 2009 9:56 am stonecutter1309 that does sound expensive. joles - how does the 2 coax system work? Do the foxtel guys just tap into one of them somehow? Goodness me Stonecutter..... you don't honestly think I understand technology do you??? I'm not sure about the two coaxel cables. But the phone point is for movies and pay per view and apparently for Foxtel IQ. Not 100% sure as we only have standard at the moment. But the cynical side of me suggests that if their saying all outlets will need phone points, there's some type of "upgrade" (read $$$$) to the service on the way. I'm only going by what we were told at the electrical with our previous builder. Also I've lived in houses where the Foxtel connection became a saga because of access and I reckon it's just easier to get it prewired and know that the point will be EXACTLY where you want it. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Pay TV points - expensive? 13Jan 14, 2009 9:58 am YSSIM bobbuilder YSSIM Yeah to what Colsy said? By ducting I mean the plastic tubing that they stick on your walls to run the cable through. Not sure of the correct term. C&G -------------------------------- A new building chapter begins.. With standard satellite Foxtel, you only require a single coax from the box to the LNB (Low Noise Block down converter) located on the dish, this does both horizontal and vertical signals, when you upgrade to the likes of IQ, this requires two coaxes to a dual LNB on the dish, one for vertical, the other for horizontal, this is so you can record and watch either simultaneously, the phone connection is for pay per view etc. Re: Pay TV points - expensive? 15Jan 14, 2009 10:04 am kiwi - do you know how it would work if Foxtel is coming via fibre optic cable? We're in one of these crazy telstra velocity estates After 4 years - we're in! Re: Pay TV points - expensive? 16Jan 14, 2009 10:05 am bobbuilder But if foxtel install it, don't you end up with that plastic ducting (conduit) stuck to your walls? That's if you install the Foxtel point to an internal wall - or you can take to the wall with an angle grinder and make a channel for the cable to run through and then plaster over it. We moved our TV when we joined Foxtel installed so the cables could run through an external wall. The plate looks just like a normal phone plate with a couple of extra jacks for Foxtel and your normal FTA aerial. If you join when Foxtel is having a promotion of sorts, you can usually get installation for free. Re: Pay TV points - expensive? 17Jan 14, 2009 10:27 am It can be a challenge for Foxtel to install to an internal wall on a two storey house. They did it in our current place (soon to be ex place) and what thay did was use a a thing called a 'diplexer' which allowed them to utilise the free to air aerial cable to the roof. They then split it at both ends to run it to the dish and the Foxtel point.
In answer to the original base question that price is too expensive. I wouldnt bother and I'd take a gamble on Foxtel doing it for free. Under the present climate Foxtel are begging for customers so they will do quite a bit to get your patronage. PS: the plastic tubing people are talking about is called conduit. We're in one of these crazy telstra velocity estates I believe you will require one coax and one phone point for each Foxtel box, and one coax for each free to air point, unless you want to watch the FTA channels via your Foxtel box, which I'm lead to believe, 'all' FTA channels are included with this service. Re: Pay TV points - expensive? 20Jan 14, 2009 2:49 pm Thanks for all your comments. Bit of an update, after speaking again with the builder, it turns out the pay tv point is actually the double RG6 cables (HD compliant) AND telephone point all in one, so not a bad deal after all.
Hope that helps any other Wisdom builders thinking about cable. C&G -------------------------------- A new building chapter begins..
