Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Jan 13, 2009 8:24 pm We are at lockup stage and roughing in my own speaker cabling for the Family Room, Theatre and Retreat. Having done this work before, I am pretty comfortable wiring 5.1 & 7.1 systems.
However, I am planning on installing ceiling speakers in both my upstairs and downstairs corridors to play music through the house. The way I was thinking of rigging it up was to use the B Channel on my AV Receiver (located in the Family Room). I was recommended to 2 x Figure 8 going to each speaker location (Left and Right) and run it back to my Family Room. This will enable me to install a stereo speaker at each location. I was told I will also require a powered splitter between my AV Receiver and the wall plates to multiply the strength of the signal to each speaker otherwise I am at risk of blowing up my receiver. Is this the correct configuration? I have seen some rigs that use single CAT-5 to carry multiple speaker signals? Your advice is much appreciated. Running both the left and right speaker cables to a single location is so you can use a 'dual channel' type of single stereo in-ceiling speaker in those locations, like these: http://www.paradigm.com/en/paradigm/inw ... 8.paradigm Other manufacturers also make these types of speakers. These were designed for areas that are too small to accomodate 2 separate speakers but still give you both 'sides' (left and right) of stereo music from the one speaker. You don't really save any money going this way as one of these tends to cost about the same as an equivalent regalur stereo pair of in-ceilings from the same brand/range. As far as splitters go, most are not amplified (whether they are impedence matching or not, have volume controls for each zone or not) - they rely on the power from your original amplifier. Say you want to run 3 pairs of speakers from your 'B' speaker outs on your AV Receiver. If the 'B' speaker outs give you 2 x 90WRMS and you were to drive all 3 pairs at the same time, then this power is split up over the 3 pairs and effectively gives you 2 x 30WRMS to each pair. This is modest, but is on pair with many of the 'not-so-powerful' multi-room amps/systems available (Jamo's 'ABus' multi-room system offers less power than this...).
