Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Jan 13, 2009 10:36 am hi all, i have just bought a new pioneer av reciever, its a 7.1 has hdmi (2 in 1 out). so i have wired it all up, turned it on and there is no sound? after going back through the manual i have noticed it tells you to use a toslink or a coaxial for the sound so i plugged in the toslink and it was all good, so my question is - i thought hdmi carried both sound and video? is there something wrong with my reciever? i did get it a scratch and dent sale at hardly normal. should i take it back? model number is, pioneer vsx-917v. Re: hdmi? 2Jan 13, 2009 10:39 am HDMI is sound and vision in the 1 cable!
Have you go the sound on passthrough? What device are you running the HDMI from? If you want the amp to decode the sound it will need to be told the sound is coming through the HDMI. Check the manual too ... a few of the older HDMI amps are unable to decode the sound via HDMI. It could be a setting ... worth a quick read Re: hdmi? 3Jan 13, 2009 10:46 am thanks matt, i have the hdmi running from both the tv ,samsung lcd, and a dvd player also samsung and i get no sound through either with only a hdmi connection, there is a input selection on the amp that lets you change from hdmi/digital/coax, have tried this but i t will not have sound coming through when hdmi is selected. i bought it because i dont want to use all the other connections, dont know what else to do short of taking it back. Re: hdmi? 4Jan 13, 2009 11:07 am Bad news I am afraid:
HDMI Video Switching only it looks like (No sound) http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pio/pe/images/portal/cit_3424/424500928VSX-917V-K(-S).pdf Re: hdmi? 5Jan 13, 2009 11:13 am from cnet:
Pros: Great sound, Lots of inputs Cons: No HDMI sound, Needs optical to work. Re: hdmi? 8Jan 13, 2009 11:57 am Yeah you gotta watch out for those amps that are just HDMI video switching. My Yamaha 863 does sound and video but the model down the 663 only does video. Re: hdmi? 10Jan 13, 2009 2:13 pm ed. Next HDMI standard will let data travel both ways on the one cable. Really?? Where did you read that? This is news to me... Re: hdmi? 13Jan 13, 2009 3:45 pm kiwi056 What I can't understand in this day and age is why HDMI is not 'Hot' swappable. Again...where did you get this from? HDMI is not recommended for hot swapping (because of the voltage and EDID etc) but it is definately possible! HDMI is not recommended for hot swapping (because of the voltage and EDID etc) but it is definately possible! A lot of things are possible, and not recommended, my comment was based on the technology not being 'recommended' for hot swapping from a manufacturing and design point in this day and age were we have other products especially in the PC and data arena's some of which are included in modern AVR's that are designed for hot swapping. Re: hdmi? 15Jan 13, 2009 9:27 pm And most of those technologies have had many years to develop their technologies.
HDMI is a comparitvely much newer technology that has been adopted very fast...give it some time. Oh and dont be afraid to hot swap...I do! Re: hdmi? 17Jan 14, 2009 3:09 am Matt - next generation of HDMI was discussed at the recent CES in Vegas
I've seen it on a few roundups, but can't find any except for this one (always the way) http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/06/the-next-generation-of-hdmi-actually-adds-some-welcomed-features/ After 2 false starts, a year living overseas, two more world trips and 3 years of uncertainty we are now starting the build process again - hopefully for real this time! Re: hdmi? 18Jan 14, 2009 8:33 am gumboots hot swap? hmmmm, yep , you lost me. please explain? 'Hot swapping' is when you can plug and unplug devices when they are switched on (ie like your USB on the computer) and they continue to work! Re: hdmi? 19Jan 15, 2009 12:41 pm ok. so i have taken it back to harvey norman, got my refund, which i almost had to beg for, and went in to see a mate/nextdoor neighbour at jb in nunnawading. told him what i wanted and ended up getting a pioneer 7.1 hd VSX1018AH for $850.00. http://www.pioneer.com.au/Products/Home%20Entertainment/Amplifiers%20and%20Receivers/VSX1018AHK.aspx
