Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Jan 11, 2009 10:43 am Hi everyone,
I have read forum after forum about the differences and positives and negatives when it comes to making a huge decision like the type of TV you are going to buy. What I would love to hear is" 1. What TV did you buy and why you purchased it. 2. If you had your time over again would you do anything different. It's one thing to stand up and pull the mickey out of one type or the other but usually people are a bit more honest when they take into account their own experience. I had donned my flak jacket and I am waiting Cheers Re: LCD V PLASMA = Why do "YOU" pick what you do 2Jan 12, 2009 8:06 am I was picking between a Pana 42" Plasma (PZ80A) but got a 46" A550 LCD instead in the end.
I knew the PQ of the Pana would be better, but as the Samsung was on a on day special, I opted for it. Extra 4" of TV, + 3 year warranty won me over. Re: LCD V PLASMA = Why do "YOU" pick what you do 3Jan 12, 2009 8:15 am Seems no one else is going to so I'll take the bait
Our first new TV was a Samsung 46" LCD, love it, cost a bomb wouldnt do it again. Basically it was an impulse buy, at the time it was probably one of the the best on the market but in such a short time things have changed. Our second and 3rd TV's were TCL 32" LCD, love em (look just as good as the samsung from 6 feet away) and has more features. The Samsung unit (as in the pyhsical unit) is a nicer looking TV but Im not one to really care, these 2 are for games room and master bedroom. We got these as a bulk order so paid bugger all for them, so perhaps I am biased to these cause they stand for great value. I currently live with my brother who has a 46" TCL LCD, looks great and was also purchased with the smaller units so again cost bugger all. Mum and Dad and friends of mine all have plasmas, now this is where I possibly deviate from most LCD owners, if I buy another TV (forget I'm buying a projector for a moment) it will be a plasma! From the couch they look the same and they are SOO much cheaper. So the skinny on this one for me, if you want to tell your mates that you have the best and greatest and possibly most expensive telly in the range then go right ahead and buy the LCD, give it 6 months and you'll have a hole in your pocket and an out of date TV on your stand. If you want a nice TV, possibly an upgrade from your old box, get a plasma, you'll be just as impressed, will cost much less and in 6 months when yours is out of date you wont have a hole in your pocket to remind you of it. I hope that was useful information from someone who has actually owned both highclass and lowclass LCD models and is around plasmas just about every day of the week. Re: LCD V PLASMA = Why do "YOU" pick what you do 4Jan 12, 2009 8:32 am Plasma everytime.. due to superior picture for movies and sports. Re: LCD V PLASMA = Why do "YOU" pick what you do 5Jan 12, 2009 8:55 am Isn't this another one of those persoanl preference issues???
I thought I'd add my 2c from a female perspective. I won't even try to pretend that I have any knowlege whatsoever on the matter , but we recently bought some LCDs, and despite DH saying the plasmas are known for having a better picture, all of ours have an amazingly clear picture!!!! Plus, they came with free stuff, so they were quite good value! mikkyg, we're also looking at projectors (and sound systems ) I can't believe how expensive they can get!!!!!!!!!!!!! Solidarity, not solidity.......The Lexicon of Life Re: LCD V PLASMA = Why do "YOU" pick what you do 6Jan 12, 2009 9:09 am i've always loved plasmas and i think the technology has gone a far way from its early super expensive days where plasma's quality wins hands down.
However, recent advances have made the LCD panels extremely good with respect to picture quality. I have the top of the range Bravia 52inch and it rocks. I also have a samsung 26inch lcd and toshiba 32inch lcd and they both are quite good. The main reason i selected LCD is because i hook my htpc via it and i think lcd performs better with htpcs. Also playing games on LCD does a lot less damage to the tv than plasma (imo). so unless you are a huge enthusiast i don't think you will see a significant difference between plasma and lcds. ---->Some say that a recession is when your neighbour loses his/her job while a depression is when you lose yours!<----- Re: LCD V PLASMA = Why do "YOU" pick what you do 8Jan 12, 2009 12:50 pm plasma, becuase they are a lot cheaper and unless your an absolute perfection nut and need the best of the best of the best for gaming, why spend so much more on lcd? Re: LCD V PLASMA = Why do "YOU" pick what you do 9Jan 12, 2009 12:54 pm I play ps3 and xbox360 and sometime run my pc through my plasma and it works beautifully.. We also have two pioneer 50inch plasmas at work that we run PC's through.
not sure why people are suggesting LCD does pc's better? Re: LCD V PLASMA = Why do "YOU" pick what you do 11Jan 12, 2009 1:51 pm The "burn-in" problem with plasma is probably why it is not so good for PC. When connected to PC, your screen tends to have areas with stationary images for long time. This is not good for plasma. LCD doesn't have this issue. However, I was told (by salespersons that the new generations of plasmas don't have "burn-in" anymore, or at least not noticable. Yeah I have never had a burn in problem with my plasma.. and I have had the ps3 main screen displayed for hours before turning it off. Re: LCD V PLASMA = Why do "YOU" pick what you do 13Jan 12, 2009 6:34 pm i think as stated the burn in problem has been fixed in newer models of plasma.
I have a 50" plasma, because the price was right and i was sick of looking and reading about lcd and plasma Gaming is fine. We did experience some problems with the foxtel as the iq2 box was close to the plasma and we getting ir interference. fixed that by moving the foxtel so it sat behind the screen. apparently that can be a problem with plasma Re: LCD V PLASMA = Why do "YOU" pick what you do 14Jan 12, 2009 7:18 pm I recently bought a 42" Panasonic Plasma Viera (PZ800A) which I am very happy with. Originally I had every intention of buying an LCD but when I went along and saw it in action - I just didn't like the shadowy picture. Instead, I went for the crisp, clear plasma which is better for night time viewing. The 'burn' issue concerned me initially but technology has come a long way since those first few years. Fence, paving, retaining wall - CHECK! Still so much more to do..... Re: LCD V PLASMA = Why do "YOU" pick what you do 16Jan 13, 2009 9:08 am also i think LCD uses less power than plasma.
urban myth? ---->Some say that a recession is when your neighbour loses his/her job while a depression is when you lose yours!<----- Re: LCD V PLASMA = Why do "YOU" pick what you do 17Jan 13, 2009 9:46 am LCD definitely uses less power than Plasma - about 60% (ish) I think.
That said, plasmas use about the same amount of power as an equivalent size CRT TV. Re: LCD V PLASMA = Why do "YOU" pick what you do 18Jan 13, 2009 9:59 am Rodda LCD definitely uses less power than Plasma - about 60% (ish) I think. That said, plasmas use about the same amount of power as an equivalent size CRT TV. It is a myth to a certain point.. yes Plasma use more power at peak usage.. but plasma rarely run at peak usage.. whereas LCD are always running a light in the background. So in reality they are both very similar if you look at avg power usage. Re: LCD V PLASMA = Why do "YOU" pick what you do 19Jan 13, 2009 10:02 am I honestly didn't know that. I was just going by the different quoted Power Consumption figures the differrent brands post in the specs for their models.
