I am looking at one of the Yamaha AV receivers with the 2 zone capability. Do AV receivers come with a built in AM/FM Tuner or can you get them with CD players built in ? I was just thinking what is the use of having 2 zones (the second one would be to my alfresco, if all you can pump out there is the TV ? Please don't smash me for such a newbie question Re: Dual Zone AV Recievers 2Jan 09, 2009 4:40 am A/V receivers are just that - receivers.
The idea is that you hook up whatever source components you want (blu-ray, cd player, HTPC, VCR, xbox etc.) and you use the receiver to switch between the various sources, which then are output through the TV and/or speakers. They pretty much all have tuners in them - but hardly any (if at all) have built in CD players. As far as dual-zone goes, most (and I think the Yamaha ones do) have the second zone as independent, so you can have say a movie playing on the main zone, and the CD player or iPod on the second zone. Or you can have a source component (e.g. iPod) playing in both zones at the same time. Some of the Yamahas also have a video output for the second zone so you could have a screen out in your alfresco too (so assuming you had two dvd/blu-ray players you could have two different shows playing, say one for the kids inside and music videos outside) After 2 false starts, a year living overseas, two more world trips and 3 years of uncertainty we are now starting the build process again - hopefully for real this time! Re: Dual Zone AV Recievers 3Jan 09, 2009 7:47 am OK, first point of clarification: the word 'Receiver' in AV Receiver actually means it can 'receive' radio braodcasts as it has a tuner built into it - almost always AM and FM.
No decent AV Receiver has a CD Player built into it (some/many compact or 'HTIB' systems do have the DVD player built into the AV Receiver). It is assumed that you are connecting some sort of DVD player to these AV Receivers, and DVD players also play CDs Second point of clarification: Yamaha is not the only brand that does a 2nd zone from it's AV Receivers. Most 'above entry level' AV Receivers offer a second zone in some way. As Muzz said some will utilise the Surround Rear channels from a 7.1 setup (making Zone 1 = 5.1 + Zone 2 = 2.0), some have a 'B' front pair of speaker terminals, some have an additional 'C' pair of speaker terminals, some have a pair of RCA or 'Line Level' audio terminals as something like 'Multi Out' outputs you can connect to another amp as another zone (some including video out as well), and some/many have combinations of these. The ways in which many of these offered 2nd zones work can have varying little quirks (eg. the 'front 'B' speaker' method simply switches the front left and right speakers over to another pair (or run them simultaneously), leaving the remaining front centre, surrounds and subwoofer in the theatre producing sound if the audio your listening to is more than stereo (eg. 5.1)). Usually, the more you spend on the AV Receiver the smarter it's method(s) of doing, and controlling multiple zones gets (many higher models come with a second remote for the 'multi' zone). I'd like to think that the deciding factor is what level of 'smart' multi-room you want to achieve and how well you can control it, but 19 times out of 20 it's the budget that ultimately decides this, so the customer just needs to accept the quirks that come with how they drive their chosen system...
