Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Dec 19, 2008 11:53 am Looking at getting Tivo and wondering if anyone has it and what they think about it? If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Then quit. There's no use being a damn fool about it. W.C. Fields Brought Established. Re: Does anyone have TIVO 2Dec 24, 2008 10:00 pm Just bought one 3 days ago and I'd have to say it's the best $649 I've ever spent. Very easy to install and get working. Just make sure you have an internet connection and can register online as this is required to activate the Electronic Programming Guide.
It comes with pre-installed how to videos and within about 20 minutes I new everything I needed to know to use it. It's extremely easy to use. The picture quality of the digital tuners is excellent and the remoteis very good quality. I now simply use the EPG to see whats on TV and set it up to record everything I want for that week. Regular shows I just flagged to be recorded for a season pass. So far it has recorded everything I've wanted and you can watch it whenever you want. It's also very fast - once you press the 'whats on TV' button and select a show to watch it comes up instantly. Another really nice feature is that it automatically records popular shows it thinks you may want to watch and deletes them after a certain period of time. So far I've found several shows I've forgotten to record but have found in the recommended section and watched anyway. About the only drawback is there is no means by which to permanently record TV shows, which fans of PVR's like Topfield will be all to fast to remind you of. The other thing is that for skipping adds you need to use a fast forward button as the skip function is not enabled. This isn't too bad though because unlike video players it back tracks ten seconds when you press play as you invariably press the button too late. The thing is I'm yet to find any PVR that has a user friendly way of permanently recording a program in a DVD type format for playing on any DVD player. The other thing is that as far as ease of use and reliability is concerned nothing will even come close to the Tivo. The EPG driven recording is the best thing about it. So without sounding like some ******* salesman I'd have to say that it's worth every cent. The thing that impresses me the most about it is how user friendly it is. It requires virtually no technical ability to use and does exactly what you want it to do with no fuss and performs flawlessly. You can't really ask for more for $649. Re: Does anyone have TIVO 3Dec 24, 2008 11:16 pm I'm interested in the TIVO but what advantages does it have over my foxtel IQ2 box that records all fta channels and foxtel channels.. and I can record remotely from my mobile phone or internet connection. Re: Does anyone have TIVO 4Dec 24, 2008 11:23 pm its free ...kinda
I love my IQ2 ... never letting it go Re: Does anyone have TIVO 5Dec 25, 2008 11:39 am Yeah its more for people who don't have cable TV and don't want to pay any ongoing fees. If you have cable TV and want to record that, then obviously you wouldn't buy a Tivo. Not sure how much cable telly is for the whole IQ2 package but I pay enough on internet and phone bills as it is. Re: Does anyone have TIVO 6Dec 25, 2008 1:50 pm I have to have foxtel.. I need it for the live AFL in the winter.. so for me it is not a want but a need for it!! Re: Does anyone have TIVO 7Dec 29, 2008 8:19 am Thanks Mozzie very informative. Well I have ordered one via internet and hopefully it will arrive today. Fingers crossed. Like you I have enough monthly bills to want to pay for Foxtel. I am happy with the free to air shows that are currently on and by mid 2009 there will be an extra 15 channels so who knows it could end up being better???? Re: Does anyone have TIVO 8Dec 29, 2008 8:59 am Wingies ... and by mid 2009 there will be an extra 15 channels so who knows it could end up being better???? Wrong! Sorry... There are 5 new channels (maybe) and they are all HD. Ten has already confirmed theirs will be dedicated to HD sports from the US and local. The others belong to the usual suspects...Seven, Nine, ABC, SBS. You are relying on the same stations to provide more content. Currently we have 12 channels (10HD and 10, 9HD and 9, 7HD and 7, SBSHD, SBS1 and SBS2 and 2HD, 2 and 2/2) which is a pretty good start. It will definately be better, but I think it will take another 12 months before you see any real improvement in the programming but it iis a definate step in the right direction Re: Does anyone have TIVO 9Dec 29, 2008 1:20 pm Oh well,
I currently get 5 channels so anymore has got to be better! right? If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Then quit. There's no use being a damn fool about it. W.C. That apparently has provision for data input too for similar functions I have heard but I think it may be more for firmware updates.
