Hi HT experts!
DH & I saw on sale in K Mart today a 42 inch Sanyo plasma for $949 and thought it sounded like a good deal.
Is it? And is the price likely to come down even further after Xmas?
thanks in advance

Panasonic is a very reputable brand when it comes to plasma's and you can't get much better value for money. Other brands just as good as Panasonic are LG and Samsung but I would still take Panasonic over those. Re: Sanyo 42 inch plasma $949 - good deal? 3Dec 15, 2008 8:56 pm thanks for that andy!
So is Sanyo not a very good brand then? I thought seeing as they have been around for years, they were quite up there... I really have no idea about this stuff though Re: Sanyo 42 inch plasma $949 - good deal? 4Dec 15, 2008 8:58 pm Brands like sanyo, teac, palsonic and to more of an extent soniq, magnavox, telefunken are a rung below the brands I mentioned above. Pioneer is the king of plasma's but they aren't making their own panels anymore so really the 3 brands I mentioned above are the best of plasma's.
Although in saying that Sanyo have made some decent HD projectors over the last couple of years. Just not sure what their plasma's are like. Re: Sanyo 42 inch plasma $949 - good deal? 5Dec 15, 2008 9:05 pm Agree with Andy. Compared to a Panasonic plasma a Sanyo leaves a lot to be desired.
Whether the KMart Sanyo price is good depends on which model it is and if it's 1080p or not (full HD). It's probably not. If so I've seen Panasonic 42PX80A models (1368 x 768 so not full HD but that's not necessarily important) for $999. A much better deal. They're ticketed about $1200 but you can haggle that down easily. It's not the latest model but it's a great TV. Two points to think about. One, resolution. If you want full HD (1920x1080) then you'll have to pay about $1400-$1500 for a 42 inch. Whether you want or need full HD depends on if you plan to watch Blu-Ray and how cloe you intend to sit to the TV. Two, size. 42-inch is actually pretty small these days for plasma. But again, it depends on how far way from the TV you sit. Oh yeah, don't let anyone sell you an extended warranty (dons flameproof suit). Re: Sanyo 42 inch plasma $949 - good deal? 7Dec 15, 2008 9:08 pm 1080p is definetely pointless in a 42inch screen unless you are sitting within about 150cm from the screen....
In fact if you are sitting further than 2.5m then 1080p is pointless on a 50inch screen. I would take picture quality and a good brand 768p plasma over a cheap 1080p brand anyday. 1080p for small size screens (50inch, 42inch and smaller) is just marketing hype whether you are watching dvd's or blu-rays. IMHO. Re: Sanyo 42 inch plasma $949 - good deal? 8Dec 15, 2008 9:16 pm Thanks AM for the info too
OK you've lost me a bit with the techno talk I have to admit what is 1080p? Have just looked at the catalogue, the resolution is 1024 x 768, and it has a HD digital tuner. Does this mean it is not the 'full HD'? It sounds like it is not as good as teh Panasonic ones you have seen AM. We have no idea what Blu Ray is, and the size of this one is more than adequate for us, we both went 'wow that's huge' when we saw it. We just want a nice slimline tv to watch tv and dvds on, old fashioned fuddy duddys we are Re: Sanyo 42 inch plasma $949 - good deal? 9Dec 15, 2008 9:21 pm wakeboardandy 1080p is definetely pointless in a 42inch screen unless you are sitting within about 150cm from the screen.... In fact if you are sitting further than 2.5m then 1080p is pointless on a 50inch screen. I know that's the theory, and I agree with it. But I've actually got 2 50-inch Panasonics here, a 50PX80A and a 50PZ800A. One 760 and one 1080p. Both set up identically. Sitting at 3.5m we can see a difference with a full HD source on the 1080p. But yeah, it's really, really marginal so it's definitely not a reason to spend up to $1k more just for HD. I'm just as happy with the 768. At the same time, people do want 1080p these days, if only for the extra HDMI you usually get or as some way to attempt to 'future proof' a little. Not saying that's right but if you can afford it I don't know why you wouldn't consider 1080p. The way the prices have been in the last few months the price differences between 1080 and 768 are narrowing fast anyway. Re: Sanyo 42 inch plasma $949 - good deal? 10Dec 15, 2008 9:24 pm I could not agree more!
Spend around $2-300 more and get a good brand with a great picture! Good Advice Andy! note...I disagree with your 1080P theory but thats been thrashed out before. Re: Sanyo 42 inch plasma $949 - good deal? 11Dec 15, 2008 9:34 pm donuts Thanks AM for the info too OK you've lost me a bit with the techno talk I have to admit what is 1080p? Sorry, I know it's confusing. 1080p is what's advertised as full high-definition. In other words, with a HD source like a good quality Blu-Ray it will reproduce the image pixel for pixel. But, as Andy says, it's only worthwhile if you have a large enough screen and are sitting close enough (and that's usually much closer than most people sit to a TV) for the eye to actually see the differences. donuts Have just looked at the catalogue, the resolution is 1024 x 768, and it has a HD digital tuner. Does this mean it is not the 'full HD'? No, it's not full HD but, again, Andy is right -- it's no big deal. You will definitely not see any difference when watching normal TV or a DVD. donuts It sounds like it is not as good as teh Panasonic ones you have seen AM. I don't think Sanyo is ever going to come anywhere near a Panasonic for quality but that's a personal opinion. I'm not fond of LG either but lots of people swear by them. It comes down to what you want to spend. If you can get a quality brand like Panasonic for much the same price, why bother with the lower end brands? It's just a question of shopping around and haggling. donuts We have no idea what Blu Ray is, and the size of this one is more than adequate for us, we both went 'wow that's huge' when we saw it. We just want a nice slimline tv to watch tv and dvds on, old fashioned fuddy duddys we are Then 1368 x 768 will be absolutely fine. And screen size is just a personal preference. I originally intended to buy 42-inch models a couple of months ago but eventually ended up with 50-inch because everything I read said that was the best size. I must admit that they were right, they looked huge for a week and then we stopped noticing the size. Re: Sanyo 42 inch plasma $949 - good deal? 13Dec 16, 2008 7:51 am 1080p = Full HD which means on the screen there could be* 1920 dots (pixels) from left to right and 1080 dots (pixels) top to bottom. So basically it's like a grid and each dot is a square in the grid
the P denotes progressive, meaning the horiztonal lines are displayed line after line. You'll see 1080i as well which means on the first pass every second line is shown, on the second pass, those empty lines get filled in. * could be as there is also 1440x1080 9 24636 Thank you.
