Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Dec 02, 2008 10:44 am Hi guys. I'm having a dilemma trying to figure out how to set up the HT room. Here is the plan: (it's called games room here and I've numbered the walls to make my description easier)
Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Also I've added in a door for the room. Currently I have asked for the window on wall 2 to be moved to the centre of wall 1 with the intention of putting the screen on wall 4 and couches near wall 2 (hope that's not too confusing!). I prefer the idea of having the room run lengthways for viewing but perhaps the 4.2m way would be ok too. But doing that means I have no windows that look over the backyard anymore (the back bedrooms will be rented to other people). And I'm also not sure that having the screen in that set back bit on wall 4 will be ok for viewing. Which orientation of the room do you guys think would be best? I'm past the point of thinking clearly! Re: How to orient this HT room? 2Dec 02, 2008 11:06 am Where you want your window facing is your choice(i would have no windows at all it's much better for your HT plus you have the alfresco right next door)...just ignore the windows for now and decide the orientation of your HT.
Have you thought about putting the screen on wall 2? and you could have a couch set up just like the way in your floor plan because in that case your screen will be much bigger and not limited in size due to wall 4. By the way our HT is exactly like that! except with no door and the same wall 4. Re: How to orient this HT room? 3Dec 02, 2008 11:36 am If it was up to me, I'd have no window.
Get a cupboard/bar built where the little recess for wall 4 is to house AV equipment and a mini bar fridge, maybe a bench for a pop corn maker or microwave. Not that it's far from the kitchen but I'm just a lazy kinda guy Seats would be against wall 1 and the screen on wall 3 OR 2 row of seats facing wall 2 where the screen would be. I guess it depends how dedicated you want to make it a theater room. Re: How to orient this HT room? 4Dec 02, 2008 12:19 pm Wall 3 is really the only one where you can put the screen (if you leave the walls where they are in the plan)... Re: How to orient this HT room? 7Dec 02, 2008 5:26 pm But wall 4 is off-centred and shortened, and you'd struggle to get in a screen and a pair of speakers.... Re: How to orient this HT room? 8Dec 02, 2008 6:09 pm can you turn the room into a rectangle.. that would be much better...
otherwise maybe just have it on wall 3.. 4.2m in length is the same for me and I'm thinking a 92inch screen would be a good size.. Re: How to orient this HT room? 9Dec 02, 2008 6:20 pm What about putting the screen on wall 2, but putting two slimline to the floor windows either side of the screen area?
That way you get your preferred theatre layout but also have windows to the backyard when you want it. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: How to orient this HT room? 11Dec 02, 2008 6:53 pm Yes, but how many people will get a "square on" view of the screen ? One ?
I agree with Rodda that it should be wall 3. It'll be the best viewing position for the greatest number of people. Ever been in a house where there's only one good chair to watch the TV ? Irritating. Otherwise you could consider diagonally straddling the corner of walls 1 & 4 forming a triangle shape. Then your main viewing area would be the opposite corner of walls 2 & 3. Bit messy, but could fall into the interesting/quirky camp. Do the hard jobs first. The easy jobs will take care of themselves. - Dale Carnegie Re: How to orient this HT room? 12Dec 02, 2008 9:53 pm Thanks for all the opinions! It's great to think about all the different options. I'll try to reply to all the suggestions!
Unfortunately I can't change any of the walls so I'll have to work with it how it is. Wall 4 being cut off funny like that is kind of annoying but I'm liking ed's cupboard/bar suggestion! Liking that a lot actually (as will my friends I'm sure ) As much as I'd love a dedicated HT room, realistically it will also be used for games nights, poker etc so I do want the window to stay in there. Joles your idea would look really good. But I have a thing about having the back of the couch being on the inside of the door (I don't know why, it's a weird thing!) The couch will be one of those 'theatre' couches with the 4 recliners all joined together with cupholders (don't know the proper name for that style) so it won't fit in the recess of wall 4 and along wall 1 like they have in the plan (I don't think?). I do like the idea of the diagonally placed screen and couch that cabinfever suggested, I'm just not sure I'm brave enough to take the risk that it won't be interesting/quirky and just be messy So after reading and considering all the ideas I think I'll change it back to how the plan originally is with the window on wall 2 (but centered) and the screen on wall 3. I changed it because I sit too close to dual monitors all day looking at images for work and I wanted to be as far away from the projector screen as possible for relaxing But I'm happy to try this out and if it feels too close I'll just have plans for a huge HT in the next house!
