Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Dec 01, 2008 7:15 am Hey guys,
Just curious, we bought land in a 'telstra smart community' (unfortunately this means we're locked into Telstra for everything, phone/internet/etc), i'm just wondering if anyone knows how much the setup costs are for the cabling,e tc, roughly? I have asked multiple builders and everyone says they have no idea. From my brief reading, it seems that the fibre terminates at the side of my house to a optical network termination device, from the optical network termination it goes to the home distributor in the garage. I am planning to have an ADSL modem in the home distributer hooked up to the first data port from telstra. From the home distributor I am planning to have the following cabling run: CAT6 cable run to 3 lounges, home office, and master bedroom (2 upstairs, 2 on same floor) Foxtel/FTA coax run to 3 lounges and master bedroom (so 6 coax). Telephone run to master bedroom (upstairs), home office, and kitchen. Any ideas cost wise roughly what I would be looking at for cabling/setup costs (not related to subscriptions, etc, i know subscriptions will kill my wallet). Edit: Not sure if this is the right forum for this, but telstra smart wiring apparently falls under the 'home automation' category when you talk to electricians so i figured this would be the best place. Nav Re: Telstra Smart Community - setup costs? 2Dec 01, 2008 11:45 am It's possibly the right forum, but the "no idea" answer still applies (unless there are some readers of this forum who have already done this?). I am planning to have an ADSL modem in the home distributer hooked up to the first data port from telstra. If its fibre to the home then a ADSL modem is useless (ADSL is for copper directly into a DSLAM), Telstra will have to supply you the modem. For each cable run in your house I would allow $100, for supply & termination. The same is true for Foxtel -- the fibre carries the Foxtel signal as well, so you need a particular foxtel set-top box for this. I think you still need to login via pppoe to access the network, it might be another modem though, not sure, main purpose for that will be to have a router for my network as what I've read said you can only establish one pppoe connection to the network at once. $100 for each cable doesn't seem horribly bad, that atleast gives me an idea, I was budgeting 5000 for the cabling. Thanks all for the info. The only part we can do now is to setup the distributor and pre-wiring the house, because this must be done during construction I have been quote $1925 for the following - 4 TV points (Living & 3 bedrooms) - 2 phone points/CAT6E (Living & Study) - 1 Incoming CAT6 cable to starserve - 2 Quad Shield Cables to starserve - 1 Foxtel cable point (Living) - 1 Modulator Starserve kit (the distributor in garage) All cable used are either CAT5 or CAT6 I think there are a lot of different systems (distributor), but my electrician recommend Starserver which is the one he used in his house Hope this help Blog - http://clageonewhouse.blogspot.com/ Building Thread - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=10886&hilit=milan I am in, with my husband and my beautiful bunny Re: Telstra Smart Community - setup costs? 8Dec 01, 2008 12:33 pm Snake $5k for cabling A 500m box of cat-6 is only $300.00 clipsal wall mounts with krone cat-6 jacks would only set you back about $300-$500 bucks. Oh yes definately can buy all sorts of goodies from left over cash... Nav nake: builder prices, i overbudget . I would love to be able to do it myself during build phase but I was told that wouldn't be possible when i asked ages ago. Thats no good Nav, my builder gave me that flexibility thankfully Re: Telstra Smart Community - setup costs? 11Dec 01, 2008 2:48 pm Yeah but you won't be allowed to DIY your own cabling in the Telstra Velocity estate(s) because according to them it must be performed by certified, licensed telecomms cabling installers... Re: Telstra Smart Community - setup costs? 12Jan 16, 2009 11:56 pm Hi Nav,
Dont know if you already have this info. Im also looking for the same info. http://www.telstra.com.au/smartcommunit ... wners.html If you scroll down to Telstra Velocity Network heading and view the The Telstra Velocity Home Wiring Guide in PDF format. Also Wisdom homes offers a Future Proof Pro Package at $3915. I dont know what it is yet but am thinking it is to do with the wiring for Velocity. I have asked Mark and he will find out. It only mentions refer to brochure in our extras list. Looking at the PDF Testra only completes the below and you/builder will need to wire the rest. This only applies to Testra Smart Estates. • install the ONT and the PSU on the wall of your premises • provide the optical fibre lead-in cable • connect the home wiring to the ONT. Re: Telstra Smart Community - setup costs? 13Jan 17, 2009 7:51 am The Wisdom Package is a Starserve system with a certain number of outlets.
Perhaps all of us building at Stonecutters Ridge with Wisdom should put forward a group request for pricing of cabling to Telstra Velocity standards? After 4 years - we're in! Re: Telstra Smart Community - setup costs? 14Jan 17, 2009 10:25 am Rodda Yeah but you won't be allowed to DIY your own cabling in the Telstra Velocity estate(s) because according to them it must be performed by certified, licensed telecomms cabling installers... Yeah but how are they going to know that... It is going to cost me about $700 to wire my house up to support Telstra Velocity. I will have 8 network points, 8 Broadcast outlets (which do either FTA or Foxtel). You don't need a modem.. all you need is a router (log in via the router). Telstra supply this router. Also the BO's (broadcast outlets) can be used as either foxtel or fta. So you really only need to install one to each room you want tv as if you have a foxtel box attached then you can access all your fta through that. Or if you have a Digital STB connected then you won't need foxtel. Telstra's diagrams have it setup so you have 2 BO's to every room. Telstra will give me $1500 credit for signing up.. and after a year I can disconnect the phone line if I want.. as unlike adsl you don't need a phone line to run the internet. Perhaps all of us building at Stonecutters Ridge with Wisdom should put forward a group request for pricing of cabling to Telstra Velocity standards? Sounds good. I know there are three of us at SC using Wisdom. I cant see why it is so expensive though. Lets see what we can come up with. Re: Telstra Smart Community - setup costs? 16Jan 17, 2009 12:37 pm I spoke with the Project Director at length about this today.
Apparently they are currently in the process of training the Rawson, Cosmo and L.E. staff on Telstra Velocity. He'll send me the info that builders need - I'll distribute that to everyone on here and get Wisdom to price up what needs to be done and is different from the regular phone connection. I have the number of the electrician that does all the Wisdom houses so hopefully he & I can work out what's needed - then he can tell Domenic and they can price something up for all of us. Project director said that it was $4k to fully wire up each display home with full connectivity (tv, fox, net) in each room - I think it was Hills Home Hub (I happened to find it in a cupboard in one of the displays) After 4 years - we're in! I think I'll still wait for the official developer docs so there's 100% no confusion (yes I know they should be exactly the same as the ones in the link - but just to be sure) They get all the documents from Telstra, so will be exactly the same as above. I know some people who work on the smart community projects. (I also work for Telstra myself). Re: Telstra Smart Community - setup costs? 20Jan 17, 2009 6:23 pm I think Wisdom are charging $3915 according to Colt at The Ponds. He will try to source the Builders brochure as I want to know how many outlets are included and what extras you get like InfaRed. If we however can get the same package through a Certified Installer at a lower price I say why not. We already paid for somfy motors for the blinds. The quote above was purely for “pre-wiring” so the blinds company can install the motors and blinds. That’s why we… 5 16275 Shelly switches require a paid subscription for full access to all features which is ridiulous given the lifespan of a home and if you were to sell it or buy a home with… 2 4516 I am not sure whether Perth has its own way of doing things in regards to this.
