BTW, we're paying $2,300 for a Hills Home Hub networking pack from Simonds. This includes 5 data points, 5 TV points and 5 phone points (+1 for the alarm), though the data/phone ports are interchangeable.

Re: Telstra Smart Community - setup costs? 22Jan 18, 2009 8:53 am amk I think Wisdom are charging $3915 according to Colt at The Ponds. He will try to source the Builders brochure as I want to know how many outlets are included and what extras you get like InfaRed. If we however can get the same package through a Certified Installer at a lower price I say why not. Yeah - we'll have to see if Wisdom will allow another tradie on site (since F&I electrical - the people they use) are not Telstra Velocity certified. Will make calls on Monday and post an update After 4 years - we're in! Re: Telstra Smart Community - setup costs? 23Jan 18, 2009 3:57 pm stonecutter1309 Yeah - we'll have to see if Wisdom will allow another tradie on site (since F&I electrical - the people they use) are not Telstra Velocity certified. Will make calls on Monday and post an update You don't need someone certified by Telstra. It is a simple cat 6 connections that can be used as phone or network and RG6 for foxtel and FTA which are interchangable as well (for the RG6 you just have a splitter from the one telstra source). You can simply have it connected to a central point (like a garage or WIR). I can install it myself but that isn't legal, however any electrician should be able to do it.. It is a very simple setup. Telstra will then come in and connect the ONT to your network of RG6 and Cat 6. Re: Telstra Smart Community - setup costs? 24Jan 18, 2009 4:43 pm stonecutter1309 Yeah - we'll have to see if Wisdom will allow another tradie on site (since F&I electrical - the people they use) are not Telstra Velocity certified. For the StarServe Unit we will only need an electrician for the install of the unit and cabling, they dont need to be certified for Velocity as they will not actually be connecting us, just providing the cabling and hardware needed. I believe Telstra will then send a certified Telsta Velocity Techo to connect from the Optic Fibre box next to the house, (ONT), to the StarServe unit (provided by us) to get everything working. You will need to: • provide a trench for the lead-in cable (commonly shared with the power and water services) • provide a General Purpose Electrical Outlet (GPO) adjacent to the Power Supply Unit (PSU) • ensure sockets/wall plates are fitted off and tested • ensure a cat 5 or 6 cable is run back to the location of the ONT (for internet services) • ensure a cable is run back to the location of the ONT (for phone services) • ensure a coaxial cable (RG6 quad shield) is run from each TV point back to the location of the ONT (for FTA and pay TV services) • provide an RF Splitter on the coaxial cable • purchase a battery if you require battery back up in the PSU. Telstra will: • install the ONT and the PSU on the wall of your premises • provide the optical fibre lead-in cable • connect the home wiring to the ONT Re: Telstra Smart Community - setup costs? 25Jan 18, 2009 5:04 pm Andrew/Andy - so can we cable things without having to go down the Star Serve path? After 4 years - we're in! Re: Telstra Smart Community - setup costs? 26Jan 18, 2009 5:12 pm Yes you can. Have a look at the Basic option.
http://www.telstra.com.au/smartcommunit ... g_1108.pdf You still need to have all the items above, You will need to: , completed for the Basic option using an RF Splitter. There are other options available. Best to chat with the Electrician to see what they can do depending on what your needs are and which rooms you want to have TV, Pay TV, Internet (if you want to have) and Telephone as well as General Power Plugs. All this can be done during construction. Re: Telstra Smart Community - setup costs? 27Jan 18, 2009 5:15 pm Ok - so before I talk with Domenic about this - can anyone at SCR who is building with Wisdom PM me with what they would like quoted (how many outlets) and an email address? (that way I can cc everyone)
If it works out cheaper if we all do the same thing - then we may think about Star Serve. After 4 years - we're in! Re: Telstra Smart Community - setup costs? 28Jan 19, 2009 7:07 am stonecutter1309 If it works out cheaper if we all do the same thing - then we may think about Star Serve. Starserve will cost you approx about $700 more and you don't need it unless you want to run foxtel back through your system via RF. If you have the new foxtel IQ2 HD you can't do this anymore anyway. So the basic option (Which is just wallplates in your central location) will suffice for the majority of home installs. Re: Telstra Smart Community - setup costs? 29Feb 12, 2009 10:58 pm I'm building in a telstra smart community on the sunny coast and even though they've laid miles of fibre optics through the suburb the estate will still only be copper.
So I can get phone and broadband but no digital TV, nor foxtel to the home through copper. Is there any point in doing anything with telstra at all; or just go wireless with anyone? There's a mobile tower about 500m from the house site so reception should be okay. anything else I should know about (and those telstra pdfs are rubbish if you're not on fibre optics) ’’Quondo Omni Flunkus Mortati ’’ If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy. Stila BK1 Build Thread The best place to talk about sport Re: Telstra Smart Community - setup costs? 30Feb 16, 2009 3:29 pm After meeting with the electrician - we decided not to go with Star Serve - just didn't suit our lifestyle. It also wasn't any cheaper if we went with the same setup (they weren't keen on selling a package like that - preferred we each do our own thing - and after chatting with Nav and amk - our needs are all pretty different)
One word of warning - in full Velocity estates where it is Fibre to the Home (FTTH) - any hardware (RF splitters etc) must be certified by Telstra as being suitable for use. Currently - Clipsal haven't applied to Telstra to get Star Serve on their "approved" list. After 4 years - we're in! Re: Telstra Smart Community - setup costs? 31Mar 27, 2009 1:32 pm Hi All, I'm new to here... We are currently building in a Telstra Smart Community. As our house is almost in completion stage, sooner we will need to sign up with Testra for internet. I would like to know how is your experience with the Telstra fibre optics internet? Which plan you have signed with Telstra and how much actual download speed you guys get? Is it better than ADSL2+ from other ISP? What about downtime? Thanks in adv. Cool_db Re: Telstra Smart Community - setup costs? 32Mar 29, 2009 11:12 pm serge44 - But http://www.palmview-sippydowns.com.au/files/Telstra-Smart-Community.pdf says that you can get it? Foxtel over it would be much better then Satellite! Why can you only get copper? The $1500 rebate hardly covers the wiring costs and then you are stuck paying double for your internet plan. One solution is to just ditch the home phone altogether and use wireless internet - I think I would get tired of this hassle. Telstra are sending out a free wireless router (but at $100/month for 25gb at 20000mpbs is it really free?) and if this works fine I'll stay with this router otherwise I'll upgrade to a dual band N+ router. ’’Quondo Omni Flunkus Mortati ’’ If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy. We are building in a Telstra Smart Community.
