I mean, I've seen speaker packages at low prics like I saw few Sony ones at around $500-$800 range and with 1000W rms but then I see some with low rms but with prices above $1500. Could someone please explain which one has big sound... Re: The big sound question... 2Nov 18, 2008 7:47 pm Sacha1390 Does quality of the sound depence on the watts or the brand? Could someone please explain which one has big sound... Just like TV's don't just look at the specs... ie. people get all hyped up about 1080p screens.. when in reality you can't tell the difference between a 50inch plasma that is 768p and a 50inch plasma that is 1080p if you are sitting more than 2.5m from the screen.. Similar thing for speakers, don't just look at the numbers... brand is certainly a big factor and the quality of the speaker components. Go and listen to them in a Hi Fi store and see which you like best. Re: The big sound question... 3Nov 19, 2008 12:39 pm Yeah I'v been to hi-fi store you could hear the big sound only from the good brands..
But I wanted to know which factor you must look for when buying speakers, is it the watts or the brand, so you'd go with brand. Re: The big sound question... 4Nov 19, 2008 1:47 pm OK, tech ramble time... (sorry)...
Yeah, simply stating 'watts' is a lame method to even try to suggest a system's output. The reality is more like this: The ampllifier puts out the watts, so a 100W (RMS - Root Mean Squared. Some companies try to wow you with Watts in 'Peak Power' which is really a BullSh*t number...) amp is more powerful than a 50W one. That said, the amp also needs to be of good quality, eg. it needs to have a low Signal to Noise ratio, low Total Harmonic Distortion, blah blah blah... The speaker needs to be able to handle the amount of watts being thrust upon it. You drive a 100W amp HARD into a pair of speakers that can only handle 40W and sooner or later they will fry! However, the speaker also has a measurable sensitivity (usually measured as dB @ 1W/1m), which gives you a very good indication of how efficient it is (the more efficient, or sensitive, the more volume you get out per watts in...). So a speaker with a higher sensitivity will give you more dB or volume for the same amount of input power. Efficient speakers tend to have sensitivity ratings above 90dB. As far as sound quality goes, there are many other factors and measurements here, but a good flat (within reason) response curve from the lowest part of the audible sound spectrum to the highest is one area they all (the good ones at least) try to excell. In my opinion I guess you can't just say 'Brand' speakers, because there are so many, and many that many of us may not have heard of before, that could still be brilliant. My philosophy is that good speakers are made by companies that only make/specialise in speakers (with the odd exception), and often already have a good reputation for doing so. So, you get speakers from a reputable manufacturer, that are efficient (and tick some other quality boxes) and can handle at least a little more power than you ever plan on driving them with, couple them with a quality amp that has some oomph of it's own and you'll have a sound system that fills your room with sound that will have you grinning... It's just that there is more to it than what most people understand and I'm very passionate about giving people the right advice, as oppposed to some pimple-faced sales person from Hardly Normal trying to sell people a system using false jargon like "1000 Watts"...
