Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Oct 06, 2008 8:56 pm In our new house there is supposed to be a data point in the family room and in the study so the 2 computers can both be on the internet on the same connection without wires joining the 2.
When I look thru the window to the place where it should be there are 2 double power points and one standard phone socket. Is this right?? I can't see the points in the study to check if that looks any different. If its not right how does it get corrected? Electrical plan clearly shows these 2 points being connected. Re: what does a data point look like? 3Oct 07, 2008 8:27 am OK, there are 2 power points and what I thought was a phone socket, it could of been one of those like in the pic - but there is only one such thing, not a phone point as well - is that correct?
Is there supposed to be a data point at each end of the connection ie in study and family room? I can't see into the study to determine what is there? Re: what does a data point look like? 5Oct 07, 2008 8:44 am Helyn, my data point looks just like a phone socket.
There is a phone point and data point together in the study, then just a single data point where we want the other computer to connect. This may be why there is only one in the family room - it doesnt need the phone point. Did that all make sense?? Paula Re: what does a data point look like? 6Oct 07, 2008 9:02 am Paula yes that makes sense - so, as long as there is a double phone/data socket one end it will work - doesn't matter which end?
We don't want an actual telephone at either point, the telephone itself is going in a separate place altogether. I will have to check the study to see what is there. Re: what does a data point look like? 7Oct 07, 2008 9:45 am Helyn In our new house there is supposed to be a data point in the family room and in the study so the 2 computers can both be on the internet on the same connection without wires joining the 2. it is difficult to figure out without knowing your setup. Are you getting cable broadband or ADSL ? where modem (or router) is supposed to be ? If it modem/router is going to be in the study, then it should be two points - one telephone andone data for family room . If modem/router will be located somewhere else, then it should be one point in each room . Re: what does a data point look like? 8Oct 07, 2008 9:54 am DH said we are getting ADSL.
It doesn't matter to us whether the modem goes in the family room or the study - so if they have just done it 'back to front' it wont matter. If I can get into house today, I will take photos of both ends and put them on here - then maybe you can let me know if it is alright? Re: what does a data point look like? 9Oct 07, 2008 10:24 am Often you need to use a Micro Filter (or whatever you wanna call it) in any point where you want to have a normal phone - from the days when houses were not pre-wired with ADSL in mind (when you get ADSL to the house it affects all phone points, so you need a filter to use a normal phone on any point).
You can get a filter-splitter that you plug into one point and it gives you two sockets - a phone one and an ADSL one. Re: what does a data point look like? 10Oct 07, 2008 2:52 pm Ok, I'm back from taking photos and this is what I have:
study: http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj187/nurselovescoffee/HPIM0883.jpg and family room: http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj187/nurselovescoffee/HPIM0884.jpg Neither is a double phone/data point. can't be right. I guess we will have to ring superviser and get it corrected (hopefully without too much hassle, suppossed to be handover end of week) PS: just as an aside, these walls are actually same colour, see how different they appear on the screen. just goes to show you can't pick colours off a computer. Re: what does a data point look like? 11Oct 07, 2008 5:29 pm Helyn, just because my study has a phone point and data point doesn't necessarily mean you need both I really don't know what I'm talking about just letting you know what's in my study. According to the pictures, if everything is done right, your model/router will be located somewhere else ... Are you going to have centra hub or cabinet where all the cable will be coming from ? ACMA registered cable, Government endorsed Antenna Installer Re: what does a data point look like? 13Oct 07, 2008 6:54 pm No, the modem is suppossed to be located with one of the computers, doesn't matter which one, but either in the study or in the family room.
DH says at least one of them needs to be a 2 gang data outlet, he has rung supervisor who says it is easily changed so in builders' hands now to change it. thank you for all your help. Re: what does a data point look like? 14Oct 08, 2008 6:04 pm Arranged thru supervisor to meet electrician on site which we did and DH and him sorted out what needs to be changed (yours truly couldn't follow all the gobbledegook once they got going on their electronic jargon ) and electrician is changing it over tomorrow or next day, ready for handover.
