Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Jun 04, 2013 1:00 am Several components combine to make a good Home Theatre. The equipment changes regularly, and always seems to improve. The others are Acoustic Treatment, Noise Isolation, and the fundamental Room Ratios. Room Ratios can normally only be economically done at the design stage. This link shows results of University research that found the best ratios for rooms of different volumes. http://www.acoustics.salford.ac.uk/acoustics_info/room_sizing/?content=best It doesn't mean that they are perfect, but will cause the least problems in listening. Or, these ratios will require less Acoustic Treatment to get them sounding good. The Ratios start with 1: x : y. The 1 is Ceiling Height. So for a 1:1.2:1.6 and 3m ceiling = 3m x 3.6m x 4.8m Acoustic Treatment is the control of the sound within the room, placement of furnishings etc to absorb sound to reduce reflections, or even hard materials to scatter, reflect or disperse sound. This treatment does not stop sound escaping outside, or vice versa. Noise Isolation does not affect the acoustics of the sound in the room, but it does stop noise entering or leaving. The basic principle used by Studios is Mass Air Mass. The heavier the walls the better, the bigger the Air (and Insulation) gap is also better, but chews up your valuable real estate. Varying the weight of each wall helps as well. It stops the walls resonating like a drum. Those are the fundamentals. There are many HT Forums around, some quite extreme and expensive setups. If at all possible, start with the best Room Ratio that you can fit in to your new plans. This link is to a Website that covers all the above in a lot more detail, possibly too much It is hosted by an acknowledged expert, but a bit of an eccentric. It deals with studios, but much can easily be transferred to HT. He is associated with a company that manufactures Bass Traps to tame some room resonance problems, but still gives plans for DIY ones as well. http://www.ethanwiner.com/acoustics.html#top There may be better sites, but it's a starting point if you are interested. Re: Home Theatre Design links 4Jul 20, 2014 5:50 pm a little late keanu, but Acoustics is a blend of Science and the Dark mysterious Arts, and toss in a few "tossers" as well, who will gladly take your $$. Much of what is out there was researched a long time ago, but that research was mostly done in regard to much larger rooms ( Halls, Opera Theatres) than Home Theatres, Recording Studios etc. That's why the University of Salford is a good reference, as it did look at room sizes normal people use. ideal house depends on the site and location as much as internal floor plan....what is the distance from the house to all four boundaries, where is north, describe your… 3 15991 Once you know the basics, the rest is easy.
