Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Clay Tiles versus Concrete Tiles 18Oct 06, 2008 7:57 am I'm not sure that terracotta is any more fragile than cement tiles, although often, terracotta tiles tend to get more fragile with age. Our house, built in 1962, has glazed terracotta and recently we installed leaf guard on the gutters (best thing we've ever done - well almost) and the installer broke more than 20 tiles just moving about on the roof.
And yes, the tiles are covered in sphagnum moss, but this does not affect the integrity or durability of the tiles. Pros and cons on both sides - I believe there is no right or wrong answer to the original question although, some might suggest that terracotta do give the appearance of better quality but this could be perception rather than reality.
