Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jul 07, 2020 8:53 pm Hi, I'm a newbie here. From Adelaide and I'm looking at building a double storey home. Whilst I am likely to stick with a timber stud frame brick veneer construction on the ground storey, I am exploring options for the upper storey on a timber frame (hebel panel vs foam render panel vs another alternative that can be rendered). For the upper storey: - I'm after something that can be rendered or offers a render look with showing minimal joins - Certainly would like something that achieves very high sound proofing - Good to high R rating for insulation/energy efficiency With my acoustic and thermal insulation goals, I am happy to invest in the products that can be inserted in walls and cavities to achieve my expectations. I've come across MgO Sulphate board in my research on google. Comes across like a good material to consider. Has anyone built with this material and what is your feedback? Also, has anyone rendered MgO board and does it work well (no cracking unlike blueboard)? Cheers Exploring building first home Re: Building with MgO Sulphate Board + Render 2Jul 07, 2020 9:03 pm Great material but you would need to make sure you get it from the right vendor and of due quality.
Make sure it is really sulphate boards which are resolving very well known outdoor placed MgO chloride boards issue (corrosion of even galvanised screws). Also, MgO boards are also excellent replacement for gyprock and fibreboards - much stronger but lighter at the necessary thickness, water resistant but vapour permeable, fire proof, mould proof, insect/termite proof. Easier to install. Better noise insulation. I don't think you really need to render them as normally you would just skim them and paint over, but if you need to render, use cement render with fibre mesh and then a layer of decorative render on top (when rendering, you would need to place MgO boards smooth side inside, when painting - outside). With respect to your suggestion to skim and paint - does this achieve a render look? How do you flush the joins if they are going to be used as an exterior clad? For exterior usage you use the sandable elastomer compound on joints (for outdoor use) and then prime (skim) with 2 coats of masonry primer. If you skim over, the look you get will be the same as Level 5 finish with gyprock. I heard a lot of good words about Rescom boards https://www.mgobuildingsupplies.com.au/ (they are not CodeMark certified but they have done all the necessary testing with Intertek) although I know that, unfortunately, Australian pricing is not even closely comparable to pricing you get from top factories in China. Looks like this product has chloride. Rescom MgO Corp Board is manufactured from a combination of magnesium oxide and magnesium chloride and includes fibrous reinforcement. The only Australian MgO Sulphate board I have found on the net is Firecrunch. Apparently their product is quite expensive and they had some terrible reviews with their older product using chloride instead of sulphate. Yes, normally Rescom is supposed to be used indoors where chloride is not an issue. Firecrunch are extremely expensive. Considering you are planning to use it for outdoor cladding, I would have gone for Firecrunch as at least it is certified. You will be definitely having issues installing uncertified exterior cladding. Thanks for clarifying. Sorry I misunderstood your point 7 6977 Hi Alex, Thanks for the reply again. I had a chat with the builder, he said he will use primer, then hydrotec which comes with colour and sealer as well.
