Browse Forums Building A New House Re: concrete home, sydney 4Jul 07, 2020 11:22 pm mumstheword alexp79 There was a topic from someone in Perth who built concrete home with precast concrete panels. Concrete home would require additional insulation and waterproof finishes (e.g. render), services installation would require chasing. Also, solid concrete has low vapour permeability which might result in air quality and moisture-related issues inside. If you put together a house using pre-cast panels it is totally different process to pouring the concrete house using "moving" formwork. "If you put together a house using pre-cast panels it is totally different process to pouring the concrete house using "moving" formwork."-is it very expensive to get an offform 2 story home? wonder if anyone know if there are any builders in sydney who do it well within a reasonable budget...looks really nice, solid... so a moving form home will not have moisture issues?if rendered adequately..is this considered a good building type... Its maddening for a nonbuilder background person to wade through this mud river of deciding what material to use, good insulation, solid, breathable, nontoxic(non plastic, styro)material but still not have to go rob a bank!!! hmmmm Re: concrete home, sydney 5Jul 07, 2020 11:38 pm Any solid concrete house (if airtight enough) won't be able to provide the highest indoor conditions without proper ventilation system, and I have lived in so many of those in Europe and in Singapore. In Europe they always install ventilation system and moving away from concrete houses (nowadays they are using fibrolite panels as well as Hebel blocks a lot for high rise construction) and Singapore the houses are not really air tight and generally have a lot of openings for ventilation. It doesn't really matter how you construct it (pouring onsite or with precast panels), concrete is always a concrete in the end of a day. I don't think a lot of builders in Sydney are building residential homes from solid concrete those days, except may be some very upscale ones, but they will surely have a relevant price tag attached. But I suggest to try your luck with Googling precast concrete panel manufacturers in NSW and asking them if they can recommend any builders for residential construction using their panels. Those will be mainly building high rise constructions though. There is a good book out there called https://permies.com/t/44483/Breathing-Walls-George-Swanson-Oram - I suggest you to order and read it through if you are interested in non-conventional building systems. By the way, what stops you from considering reverse brick veneer or double brick? I would bet on any of those instead in the favour of solid concrete construction.
