Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Oct 02, 2008 10:30 am The time has come to choose my oven and I was hoping to get some advice. I need a fully programmable oven but one that is reliable and safe for kids to be near (heard a few can get very hot on the panels).
To be cheeky - does anyone subscribe to Choice and if so can they tell me the top 3 freestanding ovens and their overall scores? Sorry if that seems like a big ask, but its $13.95 to get a report which only lasts 72 hours! Thank you Thank you! Re: Freestanding oven question... 2Oct 02, 2008 10:59 am If you have money go for a Miele or Ilvie or Smeg
if you don't then go for Blancho or a generic italian brand such as Andi... If you are broke or its a rental go for Chef. I personally got a Smeg that was on sale at E&S trading. (I'm in melbourne) It was $3.5K down to $2.1K i think its still on ...great deal IMO. Also make sure you get a good canopy as well to suck the air out. Don't be fooled by cheaper ones as they are loud and the amount of air they suck out per second is no where as good as the better ones. I paid an extra $100 bucks on mine and it was much more quiet and sucked more air per/second. Finally, when you build pay the extra $400 to get an atmospheric outlet so the smoke goes outside and not inside your roof. I love to cook on a wok and i really don't want the smoke to build up above my ceiling. good luck smeags. ...Its easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.... Thank you so much for the info! I am a keen cook but not an experienced one, so wanted to make an educated choice without being the educated one! You have been a mega help!!!!!!!!! Hope I can return the help favour one day... Re: Freestanding oven question... 6Oct 02, 2008 12:28 pm I have the full report which I recieved by email, if you want it all, I'm happy to add it here, although the 'TABLE of RESULTS' doesn't cut and past as a table here and might be a hard to read
Re: Freestanding oven question... 7Oct 02, 2008 1:05 pm Westinghouse DSK963S : Clive Peters currently have this for $1999, Good Guys told me they could order it in for less (can't remember the price), BUT, try pulling the selves out. They don't slide smoothly. The door is clunky and when compared to all the others it just seemed to be an obviously cheaper /flimsier finish. I'm currently considering a Lofra from Good Guys . I like that the top element is behind glass which makes cleaning the roof easier, but I've heard that it can be noisy when the oven is on.
Search the Kitchen thread - lots of questions and answers have been given re freestanding ovens. Some not so good news on Smeg or Omega I recall... Good luck with it, this is one choice I've been struggling with for ages and now that the plans are drawn up accommodating it, I wish I'd put in a double oven!! Re: Freestanding oven question... 8Oct 02, 2008 1:19 pm Freestanding ovens don't seem to be overly popular here on Homeone. I personally love the look of them and since I wanted at least two ovens and a ceramic or induction cooktop, it was cheaper in the long run for me to buy a freestanding range.
I looked seriously at the Lofra - seemed really nice, comparable to the big names but a lot nicer of a price. The other option is to check out Grays Online auctions - we ended up buying a 110cm Falcon cooker with two ovens, separate grill (must have for me - hate grills in ovens!!) plus warming drawer and glass cooktop from them. We only paid half the retail cost and also got the splashback and canopy hood included. Re: Freestanding oven question... 10Oct 02, 2008 3:16 pm The full article, as much as possible would be great - if you don't mind! Don't want to be a pain!!! I'm glad others are finding this such a heavy decision. I can't believe I'm less daunted by tiles than an oven! Thanks so far for everyon'e feedback!! Re: Freestanding oven question... 11Oct 02, 2008 3:20 pm Clarity I forgot to say, that I didn't the choice article in making my selection / decision... I always wanted 2 seperate ovens and the Ilve Gas cooktop with a Tepanyaki plate! I just purchased that. It's getting installed on monday. Have heard good things about it which is why I went with it. Re: Freestanding oven question... 13Oct 02, 2008 4:16 pm To the lovely Clarity - you are a whiz !! I am thinking of going for the Blanco - despite it not being the best - but it seems middle range to good and can get it from E&S for only $2300 compared to the Ilve for $3500. Will have a bit more of a think - but this has been priceless! Thank you again... Re: Freestanding oven question... 15Oct 03, 2008 12:11 pm Hi. Re: Freestanding oven question... 17Oct 03, 2008 1:58 pm Hi Clarity,
Sorry to of put you in that position - I hope this doesn't stop you helping anyone else out... Warm Regards, Elizabeth Re: Freestanding oven question... 18Oct 03, 2008 3:24 pm There's nothing wrong with posting what Choice has said are the best things and helping people out. In fact I would have done it if Clarity hadn't.
What's not OK to do is "reproduce" the entire thing verbatim. I can type what they approved and even the general idea on their commments, but I can't legally copy it into a webpage and publish it. I might even email some copied info (which is also wrong, I know), but I wouldn't put it on a public forum. The owners of the website probably would be the ones that could get into trouble. Greg Re: Freestanding oven question... 19Jan 15, 2013 11:18 am Hi, I am very interested to know if anyone went with Lofra freestanding oven and what have your experiences been so far. We are looking at purchasing a Lofra 90 cm professional series freestanding gas oven, any comments would be appreciated.
