Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Oct 02, 2008 9:29 am We have a bi-fold at the moment but I was adamant it had to be one with a retractable fly screen. I hate bugs and living near wetlands I think it would be essential.
The cost of the bi-fold with the flyscreen built in is $8500 Hence we are thinking about a stacker door with a fly screen. I have been told they are cheaper but by how much?? I am waiting on the CSR to get back to us but being impatient thought I would try in here first. Given that the current door is 2107mm high and 3600mm wide has anyone got a comparable price on a stacker door?? Re: Should we swap from a bi-fold to a stacker 2Oct 02, 2008 9:51 am For us, to upgrade to stackers from normal sliding, was about $1,100 for three doors. So about 3 or 4 hundred for one.
Big saving. Also, if you live near wetlands and bugs, two tips for your alfresco. Put in a fan, (will help to keep bugs away) and put a powerpoint up high somewhere in the alfresco so you can put a bug zapper in. Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Should we swap from a bi-fold to a stacker 3Oct 02, 2008 10:12 am We have a 3 panel stacker going in between our dining and alfresco. Size is 2150mm high and 3600mm long (so comparable to your sizing) with fly screens. The price in our contract is $3150 or $1050 per panel.
I hope that helps. Finally Designing and building the home I always wanted to! Re: Should we swap from a bi-fold to a stacker 4Oct 02, 2008 11:32 am ooh Daffy duck that is the same size we want and that price was with flyscreens!! Can I ask who you are building with??
I think the stacker will win in that case. It is 5k cheaper. It wouldnt matter if we were way under budget but we are $1500 off budget and I think I would rather upgrade the heater and do some additional electricals than spend it on the door (as gorgeous as it may be) Joles we were planning on a fan for the alfesco hope they arent too exxy. Re: Should we swap from a bi-fold to a stacker 5Oct 02, 2008 2:05 pm I am building with 'Creations by GMH' formely known as Greater Melbourne Homes.
If your budget is that tight have you considered a double sliding door. This is 4 panels with 2 of the panels fixed on either side and the 2 middle / inner panels are normal sliders. The left inner slider slides open to the left and the right inner slider slides open to the right and thus creates a large open middle section around half the width of the total opening. I have opted for one of these instead of a stacker door for an internal atrium within the house that houses my outdoor spa and a small garden. The stacker was going to cost me another $3150 and my budget was starting to get tight so this double slider was the best solution with it only costing $400. This option still works fine and you will hardly eat into your remaining budget! Finally Designing and building the home I always wanted to! Re: Should we swap from a bi-fold to a stacker 6Oct 02, 2008 3:58 pm We had stackers at our last house, which we got because we couldn't afford the bifolds but we wanted the look and I can honestly say if I were to do it again I would have normal sliders over the stackers.
I know its personal opinion and I am in know way suggesting you personally shouldn't have them but for my money I would rather spend it somewhere else. I found in the summer even with the fly issue we would often have the windows closed to keep aircon in and the whole purpose of the stackers or bi folds is to have a big open area. which we had to keep closing the fly screens and I felt by the end a double slider (like Daffy suggested) that opens in the middle would have looked just as nice and also to consider the stackers have a huge track system. There is another thread about stackers versus sliders somewhere with pics. Let me know if you need a hand finding it. Again I am just letting you know my own personal experience with them and after having them its bifolds or normal sliders for me. Re: Should we swap from a bi-fold to a stacker 7Oct 02, 2008 4:14 pm Thanks again everyone
Do you mean a bi-part door? I was thinking of doing this just widening the space as much as we can and getting a big bi-part door and when (if ever) we have the cash upgrading to one of those bi-folds with screens. I am quite keen on this idea I think DH is less so. At this point it would probably save us 7-8 k and make all the difference with the electrical pricing etc. The main thing is you can see the rear door from the front door so we kind of wanted to make a feature of it. My main issue is that I am sure we will never just have that kind of money laying about so whatever we do now is likely to stay there. I want to be able to open up the space as much as possible ARGH it is doing my head in Hi Stuey, think you’ve got a couple of options here you’d just need to decide your preference/which options suits best.
