Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 23, 2020 7:31 pm Hello Everyone, I am in process of a new double storey build and currently working with the builder on the initial design. The builder is offering gas heating as standard inclusion. I prefer having reverse cycle system (Want to avoid gas) installed for both heating and cooling. Builder has quoted almost $27K for a 20KW unit which I think is too much. I have been quoted a price range of $14 - 16K for a similar unit from an installer. I am thinking of getting this installed after handover as I think I can save few $$. But I think some of the ducting or hardware need to be installed during construction as this being double storey house. Can you please advise how I should deal with this and what requests I should put to the builder to be included now for an installation after handover. Also if I get the reverse cycle installed then would the internal gas heating unit would be removed and of no use ? Looking forward to your feedback. Thanks in advance ! Re: Reverse Cycle A/C after Handover - Please advise 2Jun 24, 2020 3:44 pm Will your builder allow an external contractor to come in during the build to install the HVAC system? That would be the best way to save costs. From what I've researched online, everyone mentions that because it's a double storey, you really need to get the duct work in place before everything is plastered up. However most of the builders I talked to has shied away from it because they didn't know all the intricacies like duct sizes and locations etc and didn't want to take responsibility for it. So for me, I just bit the bullet and did the full install through the builder (who he will subcontract out to a HVAC installer) but it was only a little bit more expensive compared to your $10k difference. Re: Reverse Cycle A/C after Handover - Please advise 3Jun 24, 2020 3:47 pm On the other side, if you design your system before the build is started and simply provide spec to the builder and agree with him that your installer will be installing during the build, you will save a lot of money, as otherwise you are looking into re-plastering and repainting all the ceilings where you are planning to have ducts as minimum. Ideally, ductwork and grilles have to be installed before as provisions. Re: Reverse Cycle A/C after Handover - Please advise 4Jun 25, 2020 8:02 pm Thank you for the comments. Unfortunately the builder is not allowing for my installer to install the system during the build. So not sure if the only way left for me is to let them install the Gas heating with upgraded 8/10" ducts for future reverse air. After handover the installer will use the same duct but will get rid of the gas heater. Any other thoughts or similar experience ? Thanks. I am looking for someone who might have tackled a similar issue as me. I have a few rendered interior walls, the surface condition is hardly flat. I can see all the bumps… 0 7951 Can you give advice on how to get missing certificates needed for a form 21?
