Building A New House
May 05, 2020 11:33 am
Hey, how you guys going?
Yeah, I'm up to a month now. Checking back with them every now and then and getting "Oh, I'll see if I can run that up with someone." Or asking how the quote is going and not hearing back from them.
Does it normally take a month to get a quote? How long does it normally take? Should I be concerned about this? Or just keep waiting for the quote?
I realize that the Chinese virus would have an impact there and that they would have to work from home, but how much of an impact?

Are you saying that you have been waiting for over a month to get a quote on building a house? You haven't really provided much background on the whole situation..Is it an unusual build or highly customised etc..
Either way you should be kept in the loop and have your calls returned..

Hey... Thanks for replying.
I'm not sure what you mean by highly customised.
I drew up some pretty simple diagrams of; the 80sqm home (2 bedrooms, 1 bath, 1 mudroom, 1 laundry cupboard, and a combined kitchen and lounge room), the extension to turn it into a 112sqm home (2 more bedrooms), a diagram of the kitchen island, and a diagram of the block of land and where I want everything to rest outside the home.
Is that highly customised?
I read somewhere that, the more you give them, the better. Should I ask them if it's too highly customised?

In renovations and extensions, if you’re the builder and waiting 4-6 weeks for contractors or materials to be quoted you’d be finding other businesses to price faster or having a chat to your preferred contractors/suppliers about lead times for pricing.
I can only speak regarding renovations and extensions. I’ll usually tell clients around 3-4 weeks.
Covid hasn’t changed this that I’ve experienced currently.
Their lack of communication isn’t great. If they’re inundated with quoting/design they should let you know.

Ok, yeah, I guess it's time to contact another designer and see what they say. I'm a bit worried about getting the same thing though.
Perhaps they are swamped with work and just haven't told me. I guess that's possible. I might ask them that too.
Ok, thanks, man.

Get the director of the business to commit a date to you for your drawings will be ready. Make sure it needs to be done yesterday approach. Tell them if he fails to meet a simple date, then you will be going elsewhere.

Have you resent the drawings to them in the last month? If not I’d give it a go along with a submission required by date.
I’d probably send the same email to 2-3 others.
Its only a quote.

I'm starting to think that it's actually my fault.
I got back word from another designer, and he mentioned that the builder's quotes seemed very low because the cheese cave underneath the house needed to be built first, and that I may not have mentioned the 2nd story to the builders. And I'm thinking "whoa whoa whoa, cheese cave first and a 2nd story? These are future projects for when the house is done, not right now."
Yeah, I thought a document listing my priorities would be enough.
Even a photo I showed him, he got the wrong idea and thought I wanted a modified roof pitch.
It looks like I have to go back and redo all my diagrams and documents, so as not to give people the wrong idea.

Um, I think I messaged too many designers...
What's the polite way of telling them that you're waiting on quotes from other designers?
Or contracting with other designers?
