Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 01, 2020 8:14 pm HI all Just a quick question on the efficiency of HWS on LPG bottles How much are you paying? and that would comes down to how often you refill the bottles. As a point of reference, we are a family of four (2 adults and 2 young kids) in Sydney We are building with Clarendon so Rinnai instantaneous HWS is on the offer Thanks all. Re: Hot water System on LPG bottled GAS 3Apr 02, 2020 7:34 am Its not efficiency that the concern (although the best LPG unit are around 90%) with LPG, its fuel costs. LPG is the most expensive form of heating anything, especially with bottles having to be regularly delivered. Having looked at all the options we have gone for a heat pump. Higher initial cost but minimal running costs. The unit is 300% efficient and it only runs in the late afternoon for a couple of hours, using at the most 900watts, while at the same time the rooftop PV panels are typically generating 2-3kw. Re: Hot water System on LPG bottled GAS 5Apr 03, 2020 12:08 am We live in a semi-rural area with no mains gas supply, so are running our HWS off LPG bottles. We’ve been in our new house for almost 7 weeks, and with 4 adults showering, etc and using hot water for washing dishes, we are doing ok as we’re still on our first bottle. Our LPG bottles are supplied by Supagas and are currently $99 a bottle delivered. Bashworth .... which heatpump do you have if you mind me asking Rheem Hdi 310 heat pump is absolute rubbish..... people talking about class action. heat pump technology still in its infant stage perhaps Re: Hot water System on LPG bottled GAS 8Apr 03, 2020 6:55 pm edskii Bebbsy We live in a semi-rural area with no mains gas supply, so are running our HWS off LPG bottles. Hence the decision to go with LPG. We have a Daikin RC aircon system for heating /cooling and a 5.6kw solar system on the roof to reduce overall electricity costs. Re: Hot water System on LPG bottled GAS 9Apr 03, 2020 7:27 pm thanks for the input Bebbsy... would be nice to have solar system installed but we are trying to cut down the spending considering the build is already expensive as is. HPS of the particular Rheem unit on the offer from Clarendon is not that good from what i read so probably try the Rinnai HWS on LPG ahhh shouldnt be this hard. Re: Hot water System on LPG bottled GAS 10Apr 04, 2020 12:57 am You may cut down on your initial spend, bit you'll end up spending far, far more on your bills if you heat your water with LPG. It would be my last choice, if other energy sources are available. The best heat pumps are Sanden & Reclaim, though they're expensive. Stiebel Eltron also gets good reviews. Bosch & Quantum aren't bad either. You'll get a Federal rebate for a heat pump (STC's) which will reduce the price somewhat. Depending on your state, you may be entitled to a state rebate (the VIC one is generous). Same goes with solar PV. Spend a bit now, to save a lot over the long term. In most states a good quality 5kW/6.6kW system will cost around $5,000, & will pay for itself in 3-5 years, after that you'll be saving somewhere around $1,500 a year. Victoria has even more generous rebates, meaning the same system will be around $3,500 I believe, & will pay itself off in 2-3.5 years. If you get solar PV, even a cheap electric element hot water system will be cheap/free to run. In any case, make sure you get low flow shower heads. They pay themselves off very quickly. Methven Kiri Satinjet has a very good reputation. Edit: I see you're in Sydney. NSW rebates aren't generous like Victoria, though there's still the federal rebate on The heat pump & solar PV.
