Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Sep 09, 2010 12:10 am Hi there, Just wondering how much would be the approx cost for having brick infills above windows and garage. How much did you guys paid for having bricks infill. I know its better than having painted cement sheet above windows but for those, who are budget minded, what are your opinion in having painted sheet or bricks above windows. Another thing, Is it possible to change the window infills to bricks after the build. I know it sound strange but just to have someone's opinion .... Those who are building with B'bank, how much did it cost you guys to have bricks above windows. thanks. Re: Cost of having brick infills above windows and garage. 2Sep 09, 2010 8:07 am I think the painted infills look ok, if they are in the right colour for the house. I dont think doing it afterwards would be possible - apart from anything else, the batch of bricks might not look exactly the same Cant comment on cost as our builder did bricks automatically, was included in the price. Re: Cost of having brick infills above windows and garage. 3Sep 09, 2010 10:15 am We asked for Brick Infills over windows and doors. We were quoted roughly an extra $1000. That was for 2 sides of our house, as we're on a corner block. They already added a corner treatment. I'm not sure if they adjusted the price, or just charged us full price for both which to me sounds more like them to do. When we went to our colour selection, we found out that that didn't include the garage, so that cost us roughly another $1000 too. As for having it done afterwards, anything is possible, but it will cost you a lot more. They need to put supports in to hold the extra weight of the bricks. Re: Cost of having brick infills above windows and garage. 5Sep 09, 2010 10:35 am Thankfully my builder included it as standard but, as others have said, the cost would include a support beam above the window plus extra materials and labour. As for doing it afterwards; whilst it may be possible it would probably involve a lot of work and look strange as you'd have to remove bricks in order to put the support beam in and then it would be difficult to match the batch of bricks (in terms of color etc) plus fitting them in to the brick courses that are already there. I'd say if you can afford it now then do it now to save yourself the hassle. If not then maybe, as Machiars suggested, just do it over the windows and doors that you will see regularly? Re: Cost of having brick infills above windows and garage. 6Sep 09, 2010 10:44 am Hey Bindala....I was told around 3K for the whole house by BB. I think we are building the same home. For use the Infills for the garage and the front was included in the home and land package thing. Is your house corner home ? If not then I don't think it will that visible.... So hows your build process going....would love to see some pic fest on the BB thread 26/2 - Sales 23/3 - Colours 31/3 - Tender 14/4 - Contract 7/5 - Taps 12/6 - Site start 15/6 - Slab 27/6 - Frame 1/8 - Lockup/Fixing 29/9 - PCI 25/10 - Handover Re: Cost of having brick infills above windows and garage. 7Sep 09, 2010 11:49 am bindala Hi there, Another thing, Is it possible to change the window infills to bricks after the build. I know it sound strange but just to have someone's opinion .... Those who are building with B'bank, how much did it cost you guys to have bricks above windows. thanks. We had our windows included however not the garage. This was quoted at $1500. As the brick veneer is a non-structual single skin of bricks around most of the house, putting a line of bricks in later would in theory be possible, but would still be a lot of effort. Part of brick wall around the window would need to be removed, supporting beam installed and then rebricked and tied back onto the frame as required. Also a damp course layer. The garage is a different story. There is a large timber beam which holds up the section of roof over the garage door. This is supported on the double brick columns. This would be much more difficult to change later. Moral of the story, if you want infills, get them now. If you cant afford all, do just windows around the house or all of the facade, incl garage (this is quite common on houses) Re: Cost of having brick infills above windows and garage. 8Sep 09, 2010 1:14 pm SavantAmeya Hey Bindala....I was told around 3K for the whole house by BB. If not then I don't think it will that visible.... So hows your build process going....would love to see some pic fest on the BB thread Hi Ameya, yes, we are building the same house. The build is going really fast but for the last 2 -3 weeks, due to weather, brickies couldn't be able to do much. plaster is up so as kitchen and bathroom cabinets. hopefully brickies would be finishing this week and then the painting is next. Our brickies are really slow as they took nearly 3 weeks to complete. even the plaster guy was telling me that this work should have been finished within 10 days or so. The house next to my block started with their bricks three days after we started and they finished 5 days ago. Anywaz thats how the things work ... Isn't it ? Regarding the brick infills, we did get bricks above the garage and it costed us 950$ just to get it done. So we didn't opt for brick infills on the whole house. Yes, our house is on corner block so it would look bit different now from the side. But anywaz we couldn't afford it paying for the whole house. We should have thought before having it on the corner side but like I said .. doesn't matter. Being on corner block, we are thinking to put security shutters on the side windows for the security point of view. Hopefully that will cover all the brick infills. Hey Ameya, I was following your thread but now it says that this blog is open to invited viewers only ... So what to do ??? ... I will sure post some pictures of my build .. Re: Cost of having brick infills above windows and garage. 9Sep 09, 2010 1:23 pm Helyn I think the painted infills look ok, if they are in the right colour for the house. Thank you Helyn for the post. You are true that batch of bricks might now look the same if we do it after build. But it was just a query. We are thinking to install security shutters on the windows for the security point of view. So I think the infills will just hide behind those security shutters. What do you think would it be better to install security shutters on windows as we are on corner block ? Re: Cost of having brick infills above windows and garage. 10Sep 09, 2010 1:26 pm Machiars We asked for Brick Infills over windows and doors. We were quoted roughly an extra $1000. We paid 950$ just to have it above the garage. We are on corner block as well but due to budget restrictions, we didn't opt for it. Now we want to add security shutters on our windows. What do you think would that be feasible to have shutters on the windows ? Apart from the look, are there any drawbacks of not having security shutters. Re: Cost of having brick infills above windows and garage. 11Sep 09, 2010 2:07 pm I haven't looked into the security shutter option. Our windows are the thin vertical ones that wind out from the bottom. What sort of shutters are you looking at getting? I guess the things that I would consider with security shutters are: Do they block light? Are they always up or down? (I'm thinking the heavy duty steel shutters which would do any lockup proud) If they're always up, are they worth putting on? If you do put them on, will your door be suitably locked, do you have tiles on the roof that they can lift and enter via? You may make your windows impossible to enter, but there could be other ways that people get in. If you only put them down when you aren't home, people will know you aren't home too. Regarding the brick infills over windows and security shutters. I don't think you can attach the shutters to the bricks there. I've read warnings about not hanging basketball hoops and the like on them or garage brick infills. Ended up being a bit of a ramble, hope something in it helps Re: Cost of having brick infills above windows and garage. 12Sep 09, 2010 2:35 pm Ohh did not realize that I had changed the settings....must be when I was playing around with the security settings... Anyways it should be view all now. Ours is also corner house and only have brick infills for the front side including the garage and nothing on the side windows. I am thinking of having security screens along the fence which go a bit higher than the fence. This should hide the infills above the windows...We did think about the brick infills but our budget was already stretched (have done an estimate on how much we will end up spending on our colour appointment) so we opted out. There are some threads where they have security/feature screens installed (horizontal wooden planks along the length of the fence facing the street...not sure what they are exactly called). 26/2 - Sales 23/3 - Colours 31/3 - Tender 14/4 - Contract 7/5 - Taps 12/6 - Site start 15/6 - Slab 27/6 - Frame 1/8 - Lockup/Fixing 29/9 - PCI 25/10 - Handover Re: Cost of having brick infills above windows and garage. 13Sep 09, 2010 5:46 pm SavantAmeya Ohh did not realize that I had changed the settings....must be when I was playing around with the security settings... Yeas, it was costing us too much. Anywaz I can read your blog now so hopefully will post some comments soon. With the security screens along the fence, what are they called. Are they any helpful. More info would be highly appreciated. Picture if possible. Thanks for the reply. Re: Cost of having brick infills above windows and garage. 14Sep 09, 2010 8:09 pm By security shutters do you mean external roller shutters? We have them on our front (north facing) and western windows. I think they are great but depends on what your purpose is - they certainly keep noise and heat and light out - good for shift workers and for shading along our western side, very hot here in summer. We weren't overlly interested in the security aspect of them and certainly dont have them down all day when we are at work. Some people dont like the look of them, but I guess that is a subjective personal thing. Our house has 9 ft ceilings and brick above windows - Ive seen them on all sorts of houses, including weatherboard ones, I dont think brick or cement sheet infills is an issue for them. Re: Cost of having brick infills above windows and garage. 15Apr 01, 2020 12:41 pm Hi! I am hoping to build a two storey house but the builder only offers brick infill for first storey. I was wondering if it is worth it to go for brick infill upgrade for second storey even though we are not going for bricks as depicted on this photo here? apologies for my ignorance I am a first home owner! https://www.granvuehomes.com.au/assets/ ... assic2.jpg Flashings over doorways and windows our carpenter has installed flashings that is buckled and short of the window frames and door frames is this right Is there a… 0 10910 Have look at your house plans and you will probably find that brick articulation joint has been missed.
