Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 09, 2020 2:52 pm I bought my first block of land, but that was last year, in October, and I've had a hell of a time trying to get to the building phase. ( I spent an entire month trying to talk to a draftsman before finally getting a meeting. When I got there; I found out he didn't read my emails on what I actually wanted, and asked how many bedrooms I wanted. Wanted my financials and a contour, things I didn't have, and after I asked him what I needed to bring to the meeting. Said something like "this is taking too long. I've got this job to do, this job to do, and that job to do." Counting them on his fingers. He designed something completely different from what I wanted, then asked for money. Recently I've been talking to a builder, well, a builders wife. Not for a month, but it's getting along now. I've only been getting non-answers or one-line answers at best. She wanted to set up a meeting (not sure what for exactly), but I'm being kept on hold and it's very difficult just to set up a time and a day, for whatever kind of meeting she wants. Now she's said something like "I don't have time to talk to you." but added "let me know" on the end of it. Now I'm worried that if I go with them as a builder, giving them a pile of money, that I'll want to talk to them about something concerning the build and that they could then say "I don't have time to talk to you". ) Basically, I'm after some sort of expert (though I don't know what they would be called): 1. Someone that's functional - Has basic literacy skills. Can read and write. Can understand and explain advanced concepts. 2. Can help with the design of my home - Knowledge of design, including climate design to make an energy-efficient home. 3. Will take time to understand my wish list and also take them on as their goals as well, even if just future goals. 4. Can help navigate the waters of building a home - Extensive knowledge of building, and building on an island. Can contact, and will answer questions about building. Offer advice. Will sort out the good advice from the bad. Will offer support through every step of the build. Knows all the pitfalls and how to avoid them. 5. Can liaise with other professionals on my behalf - Talking to various builders or tradesmen and knowing who is the best person to go with for what I'm trying to achieve. What's the name of such a person? What title do they have? Also, how do I find such a person? Re: What sort of consultant am I looking for? How much of my requirements do you think they would fit? I haven’t. But have a Lowe Design home. Not only did I find Matt Lowe patronising and a bully, but the home is NOT TO CODE.
